Default mini 10 or 10v?? - 07-23-2009, 02:25 AM

I purchased a Dell Mini 10 (IM10-2727) from best buy last month and had a problem with the display not working and best buy swaped it out and when I got home I noticed it was different. My old one had a hdmi connection on the rh side and 1 usb port on the left had side and the screen was bordered by a glossy black border. The new one I picked up (IM10-008B-BLK) has a standard serial style monitor port on the rh side and two usb ports on the left. and it has a matte plastic border around the screen. I am trying to figure out if it is a mini 10 or a mini 10v?? the other question i have is when I am loading my printer software it tells me that the minimum screen resolution is 800 x 600 and my mini is defaulted at 1274 x 576 and I can't seem to change it. Is there a way around this or am I going to have to hook up a full size monitor to load the software??

A google search [http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=im10-008b-blk says that that model's the Dell Mini 10v, not the 10. The 10v is easier to upgrade. It is, however 1024x576. I'm not sure what you can do to fix this - it may be that you'll have to hook up a second monitor [or, alternatively, you could return the 10v to Best Buy and demand a 10, if that's what you had before].

Received lowest quality mini 9 with 512 megs RAM, 4 GB SSD. Additions:
-2 GB RAM
-4 GB SSD [2 GB SD Card: getting 16 GB SDHC]
Sold for $180 so I could buy Mini 10, XP/Ubuntu, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM, 1366x768 screen, 6-cell for $260.
[Extra screen space IS AMAZING, as is having a working keyboard]

i think you had the 10, and when they swapped it out they cheated and gave you a 10v. the 10 has the glossy pretty border, while the 10v has the cheap looking plastic border...

I agree, they cheated... and the Mini 10 has much more, in terms of overall functionality, than the 10v. I am not sure if you are aware, but the "v" in 10v stands for "value". The Mini 10 has options for an HD display, comes standard with HDMI out, etc etc.

The 10v uses "cheaper" hardware, but many people prefer if over the Mini 10 when looking for a Hackintosh because of hardware compatibility (specifically the GMA950 graphics).

Hope that helps

Thanks for the responses. I purchased this mini to use a work. I work for a new car dealer in the service dept. and our diagnosis equipment for the new lines are laptop based. The main problem is it has to run on XP and since the mini is the only thing out there left with xp I picked one up. I have an XPS but the 17 in screen makes it a little less portable when moving from car to car.

A hacker's going to write a driver kext for the GMA 950 now that its been ported to Linux. Mac OSX's underlying code is BSD so odds are good we'll see it soon.
