Default Windows XP? - 07-20-2009, 03:03 PM

Seeing as Windows XP was released in 2001, it is fairly old and outdated, should I bother getting a Mini 10 with Windows XP? I could wait until Windows 7 is released in October and get Windows 7 on another laptop.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 from August 2008 (which I am typing this on) and it's great but I would like a smaller laptop (10-12 inches, and from Dell) for daily web browsing.

So, should I wait for Windows 7 or go back to Windows XP?

Hi Brad, in this forum people have discussed windows 7 on the mini 10 (v I believe) but also vista and OS X.
Remember, although many sophisticated programs can run on the mini 10 it is still a netbook ie a triffle small for main usage.
As a netbook it is great and for the while I am quite content with XP (although you are right, it is getting a bit on in years). My plan is to buy a second mini or small laptop to adopt Win 7. Having both for a time is a sure way to progressively get used to it, and solve all the minor problems (such as drivers and updates). Cheers !

Funny thing is XP is built on NT which came out in the mid nineties, after Win 95, 98, 98SE and ME were all failures. Vista which is really not much more than MS adaptation of a Mac OS with a XP background has failed because it is such a hardware hog. So what is 7? A revised version of Vista.

To date XP is still the best thing that MS produced besides a three year warranty on the xbox 360. No matter how you slice it.

Windows XP can do everything I need on a Netbook.... What can't it do that you need it to do? Just because windows 7 is coming out, doesn't mean you have to go running to it.

Win98 rocked; it took me (and everyone else) forever to embrace XP.

Funny how it looks when you are looking back:

3.1 was great, Win95 blew chunks.

Then

Win95 was solid, Win98 had issues.

Then

WinXP was farked up, everyone hated it and wanted Win98 back.

(I'm not even going to get into that abortion they called WinME... even Microsoft knew it reeked, and most users never had to deal with it)

Then

Vista sucked, people wanted to keep XP.

So now, Vista has gotten a lot of the bugs that everyone complained about worked out, and Win7 is about to come out. My opinion of Win7 is that it's the OS that Microsoft had hoped Vista would be. I have the best feeling about Win7 as a new operating system from Microsoft that I"ve had since... well, any of them. I seems to just work.

Having said that..... for a netbook, Win7 is not going to do anyting for you that XP can't do. The price of a netbook is going to go up when you start putting Win7 on it. Get the netbook with XP, consider trying Win7 on your Inspiron.

Yeah 98 had enough issues to make a Second Edition, which was slightly better and more stable, but still it required a clean re-install every year or so.

I have been running the same install of XP on five PC's spanning the past six years. No re-installs on any of them.
