Default enabling effects - 08-02-2009, 03:24 PM

On Ubuntu, 3d desktop effects need to be enabled. They are disabled by default even if you have the 3d driver enabled. If you want to see what they look like, go to System->Preferences->Appearance and look under the 'Visual effects' tab.

Choose the level you want. Personally, I don't think they're worth it and the 3d driver is unstable.

However, I do recommend you run with the 3d driver installed, because the 3d driver provides the XV drawing interface, which is what many graphics programs use for displaying video. So if you want good video playback, you need the 3d driver.

You'll still get some freezes now and then, but this is a work in progress.

Scratch all that. I just tried it and it says they cannot be enabled, so who the F knows. 3D is working on my mini, but desktop effects won't work. Oh well.

Check your xorg.conf file and take out the DRI Option. That Disables visual effects and most of the 3d features. But still allows for some XV drawing. But Taking out the DRI also makes USB and Video not get along again lol. So Pick your Poison.

Fancy effect and no USB / Random Freezes or

Stable Video, Not So Choppy video and No Freezes(that ive found yet) and you still get USB.

I Just threw all that in there for the Others.. I know you already know meecect.

Hi there - Apologies in advance if this is a newbie asking a stupid question.

I have a Mini 10 with an HD display running Windows XP, and I've been following this thread for awhile, and finally braved installing Linux (Ubuntu 9.04 via Wubi), because the resolution fix looked straightforward enough (and I hate Windows). I may be totally new to Linux, but I'm usually good enough at following directions.

I tried the fix (unsuccessfully) yesterday after unknowingly updating to kernel .14, then ran through the updated version again today. I keep receiving the following error at start-up:

"Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.
The following error was encountered. You may need to upgrade your configuration to solve this.
(EE)PSB(O): The stolen base is ox3f800000.
(EE)PSB(O): screnIndex is 0; fbPhys is: 0x3f800000; fbsize is: 0x007df000
(EE)PSB(O): First SDVO output reported failure to sync or output is not trainded!!!
(EE)[drm] drm Open failed.
(EE)PSB(O): [dri] DRScreenInit failed.
Disabling DRI.
(EE)[drm] Could not uninstall irq handler
(EE)PSB(O): This driver currently needs DRM to operate"

This is followed by a series of series of troubleshooting/error windows trying to restart the display, including "Xt server already running on specified display. Started on display: 1."

Eventually Ubuntu boots with the same stretched 1024x768 I've had since installation. I've been searching all morning for others with this error and the most valid looking fix sounded like using Windows Powerstrip to "copy" the correct resolution to Ubuntu? Any suggestions much appreciated!

Thats the error it was giving me last night. If you get to a terminal and do a
Code:
sudo apt-get install psb-kernel-source psb-kernel-headers
It should work.

Jerick is correct. This should fix your DRM error issue which is noted in the Procedure. Also keep in mind LATE last night I update those procedures so if you used the old steps you might be out of line. But it should be a simple fix. What Jerick mentioned should fix the issue though reguardless.

Hey can someone Explain this for me. Im a bit out of my league here.

koldfront.dk Git - psb/summary

I Ran across this via another forum. But is it me or is that looking like the Ubuntu-Mobile team is working on some new stuff for the PSB?

Can someone that uses git decrypt what im seeing there?

Also I Dont know if there is any hope on this. But it seems the folks over at Fedora came up with a good soild solution for the PSB

AdamW on Linux and more Blog Archive Intel GMA500 (Poulsbo) on Fedora 11: repository (with working 3D / compiz support)

Maybe someone that has the Ubuntu force inside them can take a look at what they did and make it work for Ubuntu?

Ive been running a new config setup. Thought id share it. Havent had any lock ups yet. AND im getting 130 to 150fps with Compiz Working.

Here it goes. Im going off memory on what I did. You must already have done guide written above.

I Perfer nano to edit. ctrl+o to save and ctrl+x to exit

Open A Terminal:
Code:
sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
You should find a line that looks like this (your root UUID and kernel version will/may vary)
Code:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-14-generic root=UUID=c34d1d57-59d3-4f6f-abc1-fd83aea4 ro quiet splash
Change it to this (bold is to emphasize what needs changing)
Code:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-14-generic root=UUID=c34d1d57-59d3-4f6f-abc1-fd83aea4 ro quiet nosplash mem=786mb
This tells grub to force the kernel to recognize only 786mb of the installed 1GB, leaving 238mb free for the graphics adapter to use. The “nosplash” option prevents any sexy graphics being displayed during boot. I’m not sure if this is *essential* but it seemed like a good idea?

Now for Compiz.

Code:
sudo nano /usr/bin/compiz
press ctrl+w and type whitelist and press enter.

Code:
WHITELIST=”nvidia intel ati radeon i810 fglrx”
Change it to this:
Code:
WHITELIST=”psb nvidia intel ati radeon i810 fglrx”
Now your going to need to edit a line in your xorg.conf file. Doing this will allow for 3d effects.

Code:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Find the line

Code:
Option "DRI" "off"
and make it look like
 Option "DRI" "on"
Now Reboot.

Once Rebooted

click System -> Preferences -> Appearance and click the Visual Effects tab. I chose “Normal” just to get things started…

Now Hope and Pray? LOL Have fun with it .. Also Check out X.Org Wiki - Home check out there FAQ there on some different options you can do inside your xorg.conf file with the 3d/2d settings.

Also Play with the Memory settings for the Kernel. I just choice a semi round number. I also installed compizconfig-settings-manager to fine tune the compiz setup you might or might not want to try it? Rotating desktop seems to work.

sammy I just wanted to say thanks for putting up this tutorial. Also I know there must be a way to compile this install as an iso for quick re-install. Does anybody know how to do that.

9.04 desktop with these settings kills the 8.04 that came with my mini. I tried! the netbook remix and would crash and the performance was horrible. This is wonderful....

Thanks again sammy!
