Edit: Mosaic, read my next post. I found a solution to the kernel upgrade problem.
After reading mosaic's post above, I decided to run update.
It installed 2.6.28.16 kernel, but near the end of this process there was a popup.
It gave me several choices for my grub menu.lst
I choose "Keep original" (I was hoping not to "break" my psb video)
Upon rebooting, I only have the choice to boot 2.6.28.15 kernel.
I was hoping my menu.lst would have more choices now, including 2.6.28.16 kernel, but it doesn't.
I found a solution, read my next post below.

To Mosiac
Try booting to the "older" kernel at the boot screen.
If your boot screen doesn't include choices for both "new" and "old" kernel,
check your /boot/grub/menu.lst and see if there are entries for the "old" kernel commented out.

Mosiac,
I found this post at ubuntu forums about updating the graphics after a kernel upgrade.
[all variants] Guide to Get the Best Performace from the GMA 500 - Page 8 - Ubuntu Forums
Read post# 75 and 76.
I used the solution in #76 as follows:
I didn't try to boot the "new" kernel in normal mode first.
I booted into "Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-16-generic (recovery mode)
Once in Recovery mode, I selected "Drop to root shell prompt"
Then I issued the following in the console:
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure psb-kernel-source
The currently loaded psb stuff unloaded and uninstalled,
then it recompiled and reinstalled the psb kernel stuff for 2.6.28-16
When it was completely finished, (I got my prompt back) I typed "exit"
Back in Recovery mode, I then selected: "Resume normal boot"
It booted to my xubuntu desktop with 1366x768 resolution.
I rebooted again just to make sure it "took"

BTW, I first needed to re-enable my "new" kernel in grub.
I edited menu.lst after researching this.
All I did was "copy/paste" the 2.6.28-15 kernel entries above their original location.
Then I changed all instances of "15" to "16"
Saved and rebooted.

thanks Jon_J...I have been having a dreadful time with my little baby here today...I had already tried to boot into the older kernel, but when I did so I found that i was still getting the error, decided that perhaps the psb got corrupted and figured that I would just re-do the original procedure....at which time I discovered that I no longer had internet access. Sigh....it is always something I guess :-) Of course that is why I loaded my mini with ubuntu...done with windows, time to learn about and explore something new.

I am going to try your instructions, and I will let you know how it goes.

OK, now I am really frustrated...
No dice on your solution, Jon_J although it was certainly logical. I got an error that said that module directory does not exist, and that the kernel-source is broken or not completely installed. so I tried removing the package (apt-get remove) and then reinstalling it, but it threw an error each time saying that the directory does not exist and then refused to completely install it.

I am not sure what to try next....please help!

Hey Mosaic,

I had the same problem after the 2.6.28-16 update. Every time I tried to update or reinstall psb-kernel-source, I would get the following error:

Quote:
Error! Could not find module source directory.
Directory: /usr/src/psb-kernel-source-4.41.1 does not exist.
dpkg: error processing psb-kernel-source (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
psb-kernel-source
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
To correct the problem, I had to first purge then reinstall psb-kernel-source.

I'm up and running again after running the following:
Code:
sudo dpkg --remove psb-kernel-source
sudo dpkg --purge psb-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install psb-kernel-source
I hope this helps.

I upgraded to the 9.10 distro, and now my display is back to crappy. Apparently the Poulsbo drivers for 9.04 don't work in 9.10. Are there updated drivers? Anyone know how to get the Mini 10 with GMA 500 to work with Ubuntu 9.10?

sulpicius,
Go to below link, and follow the instructions in the first post to the letter.
At the point in the instructions where you dpkg -i psb-kernel-* you'll get an error.
Don't worry about the error message.
Quote:
The error is because dpkg tried to install the tar.gz as a deb. Nothing to worry about.
Get GMA500 (Poulsbo) working in Karmic with Jaunty backports.. - Ubuntu Forums
Because of that thread, I have Karmic 9.10 working fine on my Mini-10 at 1366x768.

hi

i am following this howto on my dell mini 10, thanks to sammyboy405

but when i enter this command :

sudo apt-get install poulsbo-driver-2d poulsbo-driver-3d psb-firmware
i get this :

sorry for my bad english, but could you please help me ? i cannot continue your howto...

thanks in advance

paul
