Thumbs up Mac Users' View on Hackintoshing a Mini 10v-Upgrade Ram, Update BIOS, Install OS X - 06-08-2009, 06:48 AM

Preamble
I'm a long-time Mac user (and Fanboy) but I'm also a collector of computers and gadgets from my past. I have a very nice collection of computers and gadgets, going back to CP/M. I have 10-15 Ataris (my first computer), 20-30 Macs and Apple IIs, including a Bandai Pippin and...

Default Testing 10v w/OS X on a LCD Panel and VGA monitor

Hey Webbi,
I tried my OS X 10v on a LCD Panel (Dell 19") and it worked fine for a variety of resolutions. I tried it real quick on an LCD projector and it was a no go. Also, I had issues running in mirror mode with the Dell LCD. Only had 5 mins to test, but will be a bit more thorough when I get back from vacation. I do have 10A380 SL ready to be tested, just need to find 3 hours

Thumbs up Thanks for the great guide.

MacG,

I got my mini 10v yesterday with a 2gb ram chip. I used your guide for the upgrade. It was very helpful. You should add a step 8 to reattach the wireless card however.

I just went backwards through the instructions so I could see the pics again myself.

Prying off the plastic without messing it up was the most challenging part, that and reattaching the wireless antenna.

But Walter is happy and booting into Win7 with 2gb Ram.

thanks,
Leganto

Yeah I was having a hard time with this as well. I found using an old credit card and sliding it along the seam, after I pried it apart a bit with my nails, worked really well.

Default Apple collector

Nice breakdown guide! I am a fellow collector of classic apple hardware and I thought you might want to check out this site RetroMacCast - Where great old Macs live again!. There is a weekly podcast dealing with collecting old Mac and Apple stuff. We have also had some fun interviews with people who have worked for Apple. I wanted to thank you and all the others who have made putting OS X on the mini hardware possible. I have been having a blast with my new "toy".

Sweet! Don't get me back into collecting (I have over 50 Macs and other vintage computers). My wife will kill me

I'll swing by your site... and I'll drop in on the podcast!

Default airport fix

1. Open Network in the System Preferences
2. Remove everything except Ethernet
3. Reboot
4. Open Network again
5. Add AirPort

You don't even need to reboot. The basic issue is that because the initial system config app doesn't run, it doesn't automatically configure everything. Hence the need to delete the wireless and then readd it.

Remember, everytime you're running DellEFI, you need to be in safe mode, so no kernel extensions are running.
10. Booted back into Mac OS X 10.5.0, upgraded to 10.5.7 from Combo installer.
11. Booted into OS X safe mode and Ran DellEFI 1.2a5 again, same items turned on and off (see #9).
12. Reboot-Turned off Legacy USB support so I can wake from sleep and plug in a USB Mouse.
I have a 2gig 10v and this doesn't work for me. The only difference is that I'm installing 10.5.4 initially instead of 10.5.0, and, my 10v is already at BIOS *A03* (A03 is on Dell's support site).

The first error is an "Error 1" when DellEFI tries to "Generate a system specific dsdt.aml file".

If I just ignore that and keep going, I can install 10.5.7 updater fine, but it hangs forever on reboot after that (spinning cursor).

Yes, I always boot into safe mode....

Here's what works for me:

Dell mini 10v with 2gig RAM
Dell BIOS A03

From USB keychain

1. install 10.5.4
2. Do combo updater 10.5.7
3. DellEFI 1.1 with options as in this posting

This gets me to a stable place where the 10v boots
directly and the main things not working are:

1. audio in/out/speakers
2. trackpad is jumpy-ish

Make the Dell Mini 10v Trackpad Feel like a Mac Trackpad[/B]
1. Get Touchpad driver v_17 from Melkort (and installer by northmendo) http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/963163/Touchpad_17.dmg (V18 seems a bit unstable for the 10v)
2. Make sure you're back in your trusty Admin account.
3. Make sure you uninstall any previous attempts to install one of Melkort's touchpad drivers (since you're working on a new install, this is moot, right?)
4. Open the Touchpad_17.dmg
5. Run script application (double-click) install touchpad V17
6. Restart and now go to the System Prefs and turn on what you like.

I use edge scrolling since 2 finger seems a bit wonky right now. Also, adjust your sensitivity and now the trackpad is much more friendly.

There you go, the closest thing you can get to a sub-3lb, sub-$400 Mac.
This simply does not work for me. After installing it, the cursor movement is excellent, but clicking on the mouse button causes extreme jumpyness. I tried changing settings but it doesn't matter. Is there something you did extra to make this work that isn't in your description above?
