Default The Dell Linux ISO is better - 09-13-2009, 11:25 PM

My Mini 10 came with XP because, well mainly I wanted the Disk, and I figured if I had to, I would NLite it to scale it down . I downloaded the Dell Linux ISO which is also free, after trying to install Fedora, Suse, FreeBSD,OpenBSD,Ubuntu netbook Remix well actually a few versions of Ubuntu ...(yes Bittorrent got a workout).

The problem is that don't natively support the wireless card Dell uses. Well they do, but, you will mostly likely have to track down some How-to's, some work arounds, several pots of coffee, .... to get it working.

Not to mention the video responsiveness when changing screens lags in Ubuntu 9.04 desktop including the Netbook Remix aka EasyPeasy which didn't improve even after running updates.

The Dell image is actually a DVD image so you will definitely need a 2G or above USB drive, however so far everything works, but, I haven't stress tested it yet. The Wireless works great with my Linksys Wireless N. I have to say it is much faster than XP. Just my 2 cents.

Huh, so I guess even with the difference between flash and normal HD's it still works.
Well, happy to hear that it worked. Learn something new every day. :P

Received lowest quality mini 9 with 512 megs RAM, 4 GB SSD. Additions:
-2 GB RAM
-4 GB SSD [2 GB SD Card: getting 16 GB SDHC]
Sold for $180 so I could buy Mini 10, XP/Ubuntu, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM, 1366x768 screen, 6-cell for $260.
[Extra screen space IS AMAZING, as is having a working keyboard]

Where did you get the Dell image ISO, the only thing I have been able to find on the dell site is 7.04 which is for desktops, and regular laptops. I know the version that works on the Mini's is 8.04. I would love to try is on a USB drive or a SD/HC drive. fdalbor

Great to hear that you were successful in your efforts. Usually you can find someone here or on the Ubuntu forum to fix just about anything. I cannot tell you how many times they have saved my B--t.
I always keep a SD/HD drive with 9.04 (and the driver updates) in my little case with my 1010. So no matter if I crash the HD or mess something else up I can still boot the system up and do everything just like it was running off the HD. Glad to hear things worked out for you. fdalbor

I have been running Mint 7 XFCE for about a week now.
I dualboot windows xp, mint 7, and puppy linux.
I have mine updated to latest from when I downloaded it a week ago.
Mint 7 XFCE was released today:
The Linux Mint Blog Blog Archive Linux Mint 7 ‘Gloria’ XFCE released!
I have only had one problem with it, and that was user error.
I changed the default settings in BIOS for the function keys.
I changed them to "function keys", not "media keys".
I couldn't get wireless to work, until I changed them back to "media keys"
Mint has the Broadcom STA driver installed under "Hardware Drivers"
I also used the thread here for getting my HD screen to 1366x768. It works in Mint 7 XFCE.
Guide to Get Ubuntu Display to work on Dell Mini 10 (Not the 10v)

Mint XFCE runs smoothly on my Mini-10. XFCE is a slimmed down version, compared to KDE.
I also installed Opera because it loads and opens pages faster than Firefox.
(That's just my opinion because I've used Opera on embedded devices and it out performs Firefox on these devices).

I have XP and Ubuntu 9.04 installed on my 1010. It took some work to get the video working in Ubuntu, but I got it (thanks Sammyboy!!). I like having both Linux and XP, they both run well on the 1010. It's a netbook so I don't expect ultra fast performance. If you are looking for a performance boost from Ubuntu on the 1010 I don't think you will see that much of a difference. IMHO if you don't like what your getting from XP you more then likely won't like Ubuntu either.

Have you all heard of Jolicloud, it's an Ubuntu based Linux Distro with built-in support for the GMA500.

You can get it from here Jolicloud

I'm downloading and installing it on my Mini 1010 right now!!!
