Default GMA 500 Owners Who Want to Use Ubuntu 9.10 Look here.. - 08-07-2009, 11:27 PM

Well Ive been scouring the Net and the Ubuntu Forums. And Im afraid I have bad news for the Mini 10 Owners.

No poulsbo driver will be Available for Ubuntu 9.10
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ub...st/028670.html

Makes me very sad, that Intel isnt wanting to play ball.\

I'm quite sorry to say that the Poulsbo drivers will not be in Karmic
Koala. The Poulsbo chipset has a proprietary section to the driver and
Intel has said they are not supporting Karmic Koala, so its out of my hands.

Cheers,

David

This really makes no since to me. What does Intel have to lose? Are they trying to hurt Linux? I thought they supported Linux. ARe they trying to hurt the Mini 1010? Hell the thing has their chips in it. Are they trying to hurt Dell? Heck the reason I never bought a Dell was because they did not use AMD processors (used to not ) and Dell was one of Intel's biggest customers. Yes, this is my first Dell. Are they trying to push Moblin and don't want drivers available for other versions of Linux? I am totally at a lost for words (well almost at a lost)about this.
I am sure Ubuntu's team will (with Dell's help) work out a work abound like they did with 9.04. But the real question is WHY SHOULD THEY HAVE TOO.
I think I probably have purchased my last (for the last 10 Years) computer with a Intel processor. Go AMD????????????????fdalbor

This is some real unfortunate news, hate to hear that the GMA500 is becoming more and more of a pain to deal with. I do not understand why Intel is continually ignoring this graphics adapter.

I just sold my Mini 1010 after just owning it a month, but I doubt I'll purchase another netbook any time soon. However, if I do - I'll make sure it has much more common hardware in it.

The things that people are having to do, just to make the computer work with other operating systems is beyond nuts. Linux's popularity isn't huge, but it does have an audience. :-/ Good luck to all you Dell Mini 1010 owners ... I've got a BIG feeling that the 1010 will be discontinued shortly (by the fall) as we have just seen the Mini 12 just bite the dust.

It's 'cause the GMA500 isn't from Intel. Intel just slapped their name on somebody else's product.

I hoped the GMA500 was just a stopgap measure until Intel develops their own low-power solution. Unfortunately, the GMA500 is gonna be around for at least a while longer, since the next-gen Atoms use it

The GMA500 and Z series Atoms were not meant for netbooks in the first place. Dell and others used them because of the stupid restrictions Intel placed on the N series Atoms. Word is that Intel is going to stop shipping them for use in netbooks soon. The mini 12 was just discontinued and the mini 10 will probably be changed to something else soon too. Its too bad Intel has choked off any innovation in the netbook market, hopefully the ARM netbooks and linux will change that.

Its ironic given Intel is the heavy player behind Moblin Linux. But one can understanding their reasoning. They don't want to write drivers for products that will be obsoleted in several months. It falls on the open source community to step into fill the gap. Proprietary drivers are usually crappy on Linux. So its not all bad news.

Good News Everyone Who wants to use 9.10

Seems there are some viable options.

No GMA 500(PSB) Support in 9.10 Is this True? - Page 2 - Ubuntu Forums

I started a Rant thread there and its gotten quite a response. and a couple of options 1 of which actually helped fix 9.04 on 3d Lock ups.

Clicking on this link will refer you to this page:

Follow these directions exactly, and you will have your mini1010 display running at the correct resolution in Karmic Koala (9.10). At least, it worked perfectly for me. Good luck!

I've red an article on Phoronix site, that a new driver will come in the begining of 2010, and will use Gallium 3D (what ever it means :P ) . And supports everything that we want. OpenGL, HD videos etc...

Heres the article:
