Ubuntu 9.04 does not have drivers for the GMA 500 chip set. At least none that are included with the downloaded distro. I have the same problem. The OS works fine; everything works, wifi, camera, battery monitor and all the programs run fine. But they are stuck in 800 X 576 resolution. I can only guest this is a default driver. It is also very slow with refreshes of the screen.
I have read that there are drivers that can be downloaded and used to correct the shortcomming. But so far I cannot fine the files are how to use them.
We can always wait. Utuntu 9.10 is suppose to support GMA 500. But October seems a long ways off. Wish I could have been more help. But you me and a whole bunch of other Mini 1010 owners are all in the same boat.
At least with XP its still a great little machine. It would be alot nicer with a duel boot. fdalbor

Add this to your repository

Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mobile/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mobile/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
Then Do
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-psb
Install all the dependencies as well. This will get your resolution to 1024x576 but the video performance is fair at best.

I cant wait till there is a 9.04 GMA 500 driver support. Its not Ubuntu thats not support it, its Intel. No one seems to be able to get Intel to do / release the information they need to build proper drivers for it. (take that for a grain of salt as its what the internet says lol)

EDIT by psyopper: moved ppa links inside of [code ] tags to keep them from being manipulated by the link monster

Not to sound stupid or anything; but how do you add the first two items to your repository. All I have installed is UNR and I can't seem to fine a way to change the repository or add new ones. I can get to the add software part; but where to you go to change it to add new items. I'm sure the answer is right in front of my face; but the UNR launcher screens are pretty confusing. fdalbor

Change (temporarily) to the standard interface.

System -> Administration -> Software Sources ->Third Party Software (tab)

Click the Add button and where it says APT Line: enter the first of the two links, completely as shown above. Add again for the second one if you want, but it's not really necessary to install the source code repositories. Click OK and it will go about reloading the package list.

Once it's done you can follow the command line instructions above, or add the package through Synaptic Package Manager (a gui tool).

I followed the instructions and only get errors when the system trys to read the new repository. I get error at line 37 and then error at line 57. Then it says something about the repository may not exist anymore.
You did say enter the complete line; so I started with deb and entered
deb Index of /ubuntu-mobile/ppa/ubuntu janty main. Or should I have entered in different. What next??????????? fdalbor

My bad - it's the largely annoying way that this new forum handles links. When you type in a link the forum contacts a service called redirectingat that then looks at the link and posts the link as the title of the web page.

The links above are correct, they are displaying incorrectly. I just edited that post to put the links inside the [ code] tags so that they don't get manipulated.

The deb lines above now show correctly. You can remove the old ones and add new ones, or just replace them with these.

I typed in everything and started the update. No problem. Then I ran the install. NOthing but errors. No public key, needs drm to use this driver etc, etc. Then I remembered what someone had said about doing all the updates for the whole system to make it work.
Sure enough after I had installed all the new updates everything works like it should. Not only is the display correct; its much faster. You can tell its a krug as you can only choose 1024 X 576 but that is what the screen was designed to to run at anyway.
At least Now I have a duel boot system (XP and 9.04) and both can be used.
When October comes along and 9.10 comes out with full GMA 500 support things will get even better. But for now, hey, this is alright.
I would like to thank all the people who took the time to provide me with hints and links and everything else to make it work. It was worth the effort. The mini 1010 is my computer now. Thanks guys, fdalbor
