Default Duo tweaks that worked well for me - 06-25-2011, 03:26 PM

I've had my (refurb) duo for just under a week and here are the tweaks that have made it a much more enjoyable experience for me:
- I didn't do a clean install but did remove the many programs as suggested on this site and replaced antivirus with MSE
- I turned off Aero
- I installed Opera mobile 11 for Win7 to use with my news/digimags and reading sites that do not require flash and IE9 for those that do. Opera m11 really works well on the Duo with the smoothest scrolling and touch gestures I've found. Nice sized buttons for larger fingers - Speed Dial screen is great
- And perhaps the nicest change in appearance was reducing the plan brightness in the power options to the lower third or quarter of the slider scale for both on battery and on power, then correcting (to taste) the gamma and contrast settings under the color correction tab in the IntelGMADriver in Graphics properties

I have my Duo on the porch or in the kitchen much of the day and find having the power button set to hibernate (and use it when away for longer periods of time) and a 5 minute screen inactivity power down will allow all day browsing and email functionality. Then (at least this week) it has ended up plugged in to a speaker system in a 2nd bedroom where nieces and nephews abuse bandwidth on Hulu or Netflix while the adults discuss events over cocktails.

A very nice little piece of tech at an incredible (refurb) price.

Cheers,
dave

Thanks for the info!
Just installed Opera and so far I like what I see. Now I have to figure out how to change the icon on the main page to something I like.

Just do a press and hold any of the speed dial icons on the main page for 3 seconds or so and a menu will pop up to delete/change/whatever you want to do. My 9 yer old nephew figured that out before me...
Most online newspaper sites scale well in this opera and look pretty good.

I have just worked out how to edit the speed dial icons myself. Agree that opera is by far and away the best touch browsing experience. We have chrome installed, and it is just irritating, when you try and scroll it will often highlight the text instead.

To improve the touch experience in Chrome install the ChromeTouch extension. Its not quite as good as Opera but is configurable so that you can turn highlighting off etc when in tablet mode.

I've reverted back to firefox now after chrome started acting up. I had to keep re-installing the chrometouch addon because it just kept failing to run, firefox seems much smoother anyway. Thanks for the tip on Opera mini. I use it on my iPhone and think it's great, so I'm glad to hear it works well on the duo.
