Default do you think its a ipad killer? - 11-29-2010, 03:34 PM

Hey so in my relentless pursuit of finding the dell inspiron duo i have noticed Microsoft attachment to this product and i am wondering if Microsoft is thinking it will be there ipad rebuttle. I'n my opinion this product will give the ipad a run for its money.

Cons:
1. Dell products are hard to find other then dell.ca/com
2. Product is absolutely unknown outside of the tech community.
3. 4 hours battery life... like seriously? what is up with that???
4. UI may not be as friendly as the ipads, and defiantly not as familiar
5. No monitor out

Pros:

1. Full windows operating system( or linux, and perhaps a little hackintosh support)
2. Intel® Atom® Dual Core N550 (1.5GHz/1MB cache) and 2gb DDR3 SDRAM
3. A keyboard
4. You know that little browser plug in called flash that 90% of sites use... oh yeah the duo has it :P
5. Webcam and microphone
6. better screen resolution

but when it comes down to it, these are both novelty items aren't they? and i'm sure that two people went into a crowd of people, one with a ipad, one with a duo, that the duo guy would have much more interest. Because common, it swivels!

I'm not sure if it is an iPad killer, but as far as I'm concerned, if it ends up with decent Hackintosh support, it might have enough pluses to get me to retire/pass on my mini9.

Pros:
- Bigger Screen
- Bigger Keyboard
- Touch Screen/Tablet configuration

Cons: (for me )
- limited/no OSx86 support(?)
- No VGA output (on the fence about)

Dell Mini 9 - Cherry Red. 2GB RAM, 64GB RunCore, BlueTooth, 10.6.7 (working on getting 10.6.8 'working' )

I wish people would stop with this "xxx killer" argument, for any value of xxx. The duo and the iPad overlap some, but most people attracted to the iPad are not just looking for a tablet, they like the whole Apple experience. Which, BTW, you would not get with a Hackintosh as OS X has no touchscreen support (unlike Windows.)

The duo is a new twist on the convertible tablet, of which there have been quite a few examples before. It is much cheaper, smaller and lighter than most of those, and will attract its own set of users.

I wish that people would care less about a feud and more about the products them selfs.

The ipad itself was a new twist on slate computers, that have been around for a long time i'm afraid. Neither are NEW innovations, they are the reiterations of a past tech that has been battling for suppremecy a long time.

People will compare the I-pad to the Duo but also complain that the Duo doesn’t have a video out…..but the I-pad doesn’t have one. I would agree that the Duo and the I-pad overlap a bit but are not really in the same class. Duo is a mini laptop with a touch screen. The I-pad is a device that will run an app…. One app at a time. I can run my Rhapsody and read a Nook book and toggle between IE all at the same time….. IDK… I really like the Duo so far. Also if you really need a SD card reader would it really be that big a deal to use a SD card USB dongle?

In a nutshell, I would say that what makes the duo special, is that it can draw in buyers who were thinking about buying something like a tablet, or netbook, or e-reader. The Duo, for a reasonable price, can accomplish that of all three devices.

The Duo is not an Ipad killer. However, for those who were debating on getting either a netbook or an Ipad (or like device) this Holiday Season... can get a device that can be both.

The Ipad is alive and well and does its limited functionality well. Millions will keep paying for the incremental tweaks every year or so. I doubt anything will "Kill" the Ipad for the millions who like to play games with it. I needed a small computer and I don't play games so I chose the DUO and it has killed the Ipad for me. The Ipad is not even in the same ball park when you compare the functionality the DUO design brings to the market.
