Default What a great machine! - 01-13-2011, 08:04 PM

Hi all, this is my first post.

I just scored a new 11z, one of the Sprint models (Dell 1121). This thing is quick and portable. It will be my new work computer.

I upgraded to 8GB of memory today, and man...it just feels faster. It may be overkill for my non-gaming uses (i primarily use lots of productivity programs, outlook, ms visio, ms project, tons of chrome and IE tabs). But, I SO-DIMM DDR3 can be had for very cheap right now ($80 for 8gb patriot 10600), and I could probably use it elsewhere in a year or two.

I'm going to look through the forum, but I understand that the i3 11z is somewhat new. Any suggestions on popular performance adjustments and/or removal of Dell bloatware?

Default ram - 01-14-2011, 10:29 PM

I have the same netbook and put a 4gb of patriot ram , for about $40 , bringing me to 6gb.

Its a nice machine so far

Do you know it has a gobi 2000 wwan card? Supposedly this can be loaded with different firmware for different carriers.

If you remove the battery , you will find a sim slot

I have been working to see if I can switch profiles from cdma to gsm and more, also this card has gps .

Under linux, I was able to get it to pick up as gsm , but no connection.

I dont know if it has special restrictions or what, but we should work on finding out

I'm looking into the wwan card now. I don't have it hooked up to Sprint, but would be interested to know the carrier options.

What is the deal with the built in gps? Can it be used without a mobile broadband service? Specifically, with software like MS Streets & Trips? In most cases, I have a wifi connection, but it would be cool to be able to use the gps whenever I want.

yes supposedly it works with streets and trips. I am not sure if it uses cellular service to get the gps or if the gps can be used standalone

I put a sim card in mine for att, and changed the firmware to load UMTS instead of the sprint cdma

It picks up my sim card , thing is I dont have an active or valid sim card But I think the sim slot works once you do this

(I dont have a valid sim to test with) but if I go overseas, I will use prepaid sims and will try it out

If you navigate to

C:\Program Files x86\QUALCOMM\Images\Dell

You see several folders

0,1,2,3,6,15, UMTS

I switched the profile to UMTS to get the sim card to pick up , and used the verizon connection manager for settings

Havent got a way to test it any further

I removed the battery, but do not see a slot for a SIM. In fact, there is nothing that looks like a cover or access port under the battery. Do you have any pics of where the SIM goes?

Here the problem is discussed about the speed of dell inspiron 11z. As the user had mentioned that he had upgraded his device up to 8gb memory but still it is not working speedily. I would like to mention sometime it happens due to unnecessary installation of various software’s. User should uninstall unnecessary s/w and reboot the device. Speed will increase automatically. Someone on this looking into the wan card now in dell inspiron 11z and they had demanded images for that.
