Unhappy HD problem or motherboard? - 11-06-2010, 10:26 PM

Hi guys, I've buy a dell 11z but this give me some troubles, I was just so happy with this buy...

Then, the HD (an Western digital 250GB) begin to make a funny noise at random times (on idle mostly), a month later I have to get so many data corruption on files, I've report this to a service center and they changes me the HD to a new one toshiba, but still make this noise again

This can be a MB problem?, firmware or something like that?

I hope not get again data corruption

Searching on internet I've found about a `clicking noise` problem, but they said that has no long way solution

What do you recomend me to do?

...And sorry about my very bad english, I'm learning about

I dunno if it's causing the noise, but hard drive head parking can occur when idle. Head parking will make a noticeable click.

In Linux, I can use the "hdparm" utility to keep the drive from parking the heads.

Search for "windows head parking" or similar for more info.

Thanks for answer me.

But, this noise can get me again data corruption or is normal?

Sounds like you may have just had bad luck and got another bad hard drive. I doubt that's a motherboard problem, but you never know. If it is a motherboard problem, it would be a rare problem so you probably wouldn't find much help.

You running Linux or Windows?

If you're running windows, download HDTune:
http://www.hdtune.com/files/hdtune_255.exe

And run an Error Scan. It'll check your hard drive for bad sectors. If there are lots of bad sectors, that would be your problem.

Hi, thanks for answer me.

I've tested (on quick mode) and result no errors founded.

This sound is very annoying and worrying, gives the feeling of being broken.

What OS are you running? Sounds like it might be a driver problem then. Like I said, very unlikely that it's motherboard but it could be.

If you're running Windows, make sure you got the latest drivers here:

It could certainly be a motherboard problem - if the motherboard has a bad connection or a power rail issue then the HD might be power cycling on and off... It would click and it also would corrupt data.

I'd expect it to blue screen with that fault though.

If it was a bad connection, that is a bad connection problem. If it is a power rail issue, that is a power supply/delivery problem. Both of which would not require a new motherboard, therefore not motherboard problems. Like I said in two posts, it could be a motherboard problem, but it is very unlikely. The two problems you described are not issues with the motherboard, correct? I work on almost all desktops and hardly any laptops, so I could be mistaken.

I do agree though that most motherboard problems are going to blue screen the computer. That is why I think it is highly unlikely to be a motherboard problem, but you never know without actually being there a diagnosing the problem yourself.

Thanks both.

I don't get any blue screen, just a annoying noise from HD so far; not always, just a random times, mostly on IDLE.

But with the Western Digital disk just after about 20 days then begins to gave me a data corruption, this HD was been used about 10 days.

So, worring me.
