Hi - how do I tell if I have the old generation? I brought my 11z used.
Could not find any information on how to do this so I posted my experience. Hope it helps some people.
I have a first generation 11z with the old style touchpad without buttons. Have been looking to replace the touchpad for some time. The thing was very poorly designed and a pain for me to use. Ruined the whole laptop for me.
I finally found a replacement touchpad/palmrest with mouse buttons on Ebay for $39.95. (Dell Inspiron Mini 11z Mouse Palmrest Touchpad 99P01) Received it and installed it today. Huge improvement. It's like using a new laptop after struggling with using the old touchpad for months.
Followed the instructions here for removing the palm rest: Documentation
Disconnected and removed old palm rest. Connected new palmrest. Not hard at all.
Was hoping when the computer booted up it would work with no problems but unfortunately, NOT. Blue screen of death as soon as I touched mousepad.
Played around with it for awhile and came to this solution:
After installing the new palm rest plug in a USB mouse and turn on the laptop, dont touch touchpad!
Go to Dell's website and download newest Synaptics input driver for 11z.
Uninstall Elan software.
Reboot into safe mode and delete any Elan driver setup files on hard drive.
Go into device manager-(mice and other pointing devices) and uninstall the mouse entry.
Reboot back into safe mode, install the new Synaptics driver.
Reboot. All done. Configure Synaptics how you want.
I am sure there may be an easier way but this worked for me. Reason for rebooting into safe mode is that every time I tried to unistall the Elan software and Elan touchpad from Device Manager when I rebooted it would be detected and the software reinstalled again.
Hope this is fairly clear and of use to some.[/QUOTE]
