Default 11z - Full Upgrade - SSD, BT, WLAN & WWAN - 08-16-2010, 01:34 AM

So, not being a beginner with PC's, I have to say this is a great laptop but a Bit@@ch to change parts... So, Stupidly, I actually ordered the 4Gb ram from Dell... Yes, I over paid... But I kept that component and made no changes to it. I did however added a 128 GB SSD from WD... I found it on New Egg for about 229.00 and couldn’t pass up the offer... In fact i have been very pleased with the WD SSD...

Next, I upgraded the WLAN card to the Intel Centrino 6300 N... This has actually been a disappointment to me... I know it’s crazy but I actually "LIKED' the Dell wireless utility... The Intel ProSet sucks in my opinion... Or my lack of knowledge....

I've also added the BT 365 with EDR and that was a snap.... Literly!

And Finally, I also included an at@t Gobi Wireless card for that extra slot... Now many may be wondering how I solved the antenna issue as this configuration calls for five in total... I Purchased three Tyco Antennas and wired them through the bezel of the display screen...

Now, I don’t know if that’s the problem or if I just need to go back to the Dell 5120 and use the Dell wireless manager and delete the rest... including the Gobi WWAN card.

I just hate wasting a PCIE slot...

Has anyone looked at the Broadcom Mini PCIE slots to see if they could help boost the graphics??? Any other logical used for it? Add an additional SSD? I can get a 32Gb PCIE SSD for 40.00...?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

Also, I can post some pics if anyone in interested...

Mini PCIe SSDs only work in Mini PCIe SSD slots.

Mini 9 | Intel 5100 Wifi | Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook
Mini 1012 | SSD | Intel 6200 Wifi | Ubuntu 11.10 64bit

You can download the service manual right from the dell website. Contains everything you need to know to get it apart and back together.
