Default 11z rebooting on it's own then hanging - 07-05-2010, 03:37 PM

I keep all my computer's on 24/7 and have never had this happen before:

Four times now I have found my 11z has turned itself off and is hung up on the Dell logo screen trying to reboot. All four times I have not been using the computer when it happened and the only program running was AVG in the background (a scan was not in progress).

Why has it powered down and subsequently gotten hung up trying to reboot? It's not an overheating issue, the 11z is cool to the touch, and when computer's overheat they turn off without rebooting.

The only way to get out of the Dell logo screen is to hold down the power button and turn off the computer. Once shutdown I hit the power button again and the computer boots fine.

Anyone else have this happen?

2 possibilities:

1. bad motherboard - not easy to diagnose
2. driver problem - to resolve this problem, log into safe mode and update the driver

curious, why people leave their computer on 24 hours a day?
i turn off my PCs whenever possible to save power, extend the life of LCD, motherboard
and battery. So many problems exist because people don't reboot their PC.

A few things you could check:

1. Check the event log. Right-click Computer and select Manage. Select Event Viewer in the left-hand pane and check the various logs in the right-hand pane. Looks for events that happened around the time the computer rebooted.

2. Check the memory.dmp file. This file is created when a PC bluescreens and restarts. You can find info on opening and reading this file here: How to read the small memory dump files that Windows creates for debugging

3. Run a memory tester like memtest86+ (Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool). I think they have a version for USB key which you'll need because we have no CD/DVD drive.

Good luck!

Swapped out the motherboard, RAM, battery, and touchpad and two days later the computer once again rebooted on its own and hung on the Dell splash screen.

Today I swapped out the hard drive, we'll see if that cures it.

After that the only thing I didn't swap out is the built-in monitor screen.
