Default Pinout for WWAN slot is insane - 04-27-2010, 02:47 AM

Below is my interpretation of the pin out for the WWAN slot in a 11z. It's based on the pin out diagram from here. I've tried a couple of (true PCIe) mini PCIe cards in that slot and they don't work, so I was guessing it was USB over mini PCIe only. Pins 36/38 are USB, so I was assuming they'd be there. Now I don't know what to think...Maybe the Gobi WWAN cards use a special pin out? I also just might not know what I'm doing.

Interesting!

I wonder if some of the reserved pins are for communication with the SIM card, which seems to be built onto the mobo?

I have a UK 11z, which unfortunately doesn't have this connector (pins are there, but connector isn't soldered to the board), but I would be very interested in knowing how the USB Pins work; then I could put together a USB GPS in the space for the card.

Thats part of the craziness. The SIM card pins are 8-16. But I don't see anything connected to them. My 11z does have the SIM card slot installed though...

I took pictures of the underside of the MB last night that I'm going to take a better look at tonight and see if I can track the pins on the underside.

The board is definitely a multi layer PCB, so you can't see the connections in the not visible layers. My guess is that the slot have the USB and SMB buses connected (most laptop's WWAN port don't have the PCIe bus connected, as I've had read). What type of cards have you tested?

I think figuring out the reserved connections is a dificult and potentially risky task. Probably they are useless to the end user, but I might be wrong.

I've bought my 11z from Chile, and it doesn't have the PCIe and SIM connectors soldered on board (neither the antenna connection). I'm looking forward to integrate a USB WWAN module I have, but I'll would like to use the battery compartment accesible SIM slot, so I don't need to remove the keyboard to plce the SIM. Or maybe I'll buy a PCIe module. Anyone know where can I find the missing SIM slot?

I'd be interested to know if all I'd need to do is solder on a PCI-E connector to have a working slot. I'm Level-2 SMT qualified, so it wouldn't be a problem to do myself...

Though I'm pretty sure Dell will have left off all manner of components required to make it actually work.

I've tried a Crystal Broadcom HD card and a couple of different NIC's.

I know about multilayer PCB's. just don't know how to tell whether I'm looking at one.
The WLAN slot USB lines are very easy to see. Thought WWAN would be the same.

I have a pic of the SIM card. I'll post it in the next couple of days.

Google jkkmobile. That guy is the master of adding SIM card slots.
