Default Celeron 743 performance? - 11-01-2009, 07:20 PM

In depth reviews of the 11Z are scarce. The only one I could find was from Notebookreview.com and it was reviewing the Celeron 723. So, my question is what is the difference between the Celeron 723 and 743? Is it only 100MHz? Architecture or platform differences? How does the 743 stack up against the 723 and Atom N270/80?

There's no doubt I'm getting an 11Z over an Atom based netbook even if just for the chipset/graphics improvements and better/bigger screen. Just curious how the CPU stacks up. Thanks.

The 723 is clocked at 1,2 GHz, the 743 at 1,3. The difference will be minimal. However, according to the Intel specifications page, the 743 doesn't support 64bit systems, the 723 does.
The performance is only slightly better than an Atom Cpu, you really should be going for the Dual core SU4100.

With the dual core and Windows 7 the 11z comes in at $504 new. I'd wait for it to hit the outlet w/ coupon code before I'd go dual core. As much as I like the 11z there are too many other outlet Dell's I could get for $504 or under that out spec it (or the HP dm3z). Maybe some dual cores will hit the outlet later this month.

I have 64-bit Win7 running on the 743..

If you go here:

List of Intel Celeron microprocessors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

search for "ULV 743" - you'll see that the 743 is a slightly bumped up version of the 723 by comparison.

Other early reports have indicated that it's 1.7-2.5x the speed of the N270 - based on the process at hand.

I have both located here - and overall - the 743 appears to be "snappier" than the Atom (also given the fact that the mini 10/n270 is only outputting 1024x600 vs. 1366x728 (I think) - it's significantly faster - IMHO)) ..

But that may be due to the differences between 32-bit vs. 64-bit on the two machines...

So I see on Intel's page that the 723 is a 64 bit capable cpu, but for some reason, Vista and all came with the 32 bit version installed. I upgraded to Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit, I am thinking about reinstalling with the 64 bit version. Will there be a substantial performance gain?

IntelĀ® CeleronĀ® M Processor ULV 723 (1M Cache, 1.20 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) with SPEC Code(s) SLGAM, SLGAS
To give you an idea -

On the 11z - 64-bit - Win7 Home Premium - the 743 got a 3.1 processor rating...

On the 10v - 32-bit - Win7 Home Premium - the N270 got a 2.2 processor rating...

So overall - pretty significant difference (50% increase according to these measurements) between the 11z and it's little sibling - and from the general speed of the systems - I'd say that's a pretty good comparative analysis...

If I were using these personally (they're for my kids) - I'd definitely prefer the 11z (I'm actually considering purchasing one for myself in the near future - especially if I can get the dual-core via the outlet for a significant price drop)

One other consideration, bearing in mind that I'm using the dual-core SU4100 and would DEFINITELY recommend that, the Celeron and Pentium CPUs on the 11z are Penryn-core based. If you look at the CPU comparison benchmarks, the Celeron and Pentium both beat the Atom within an inch of its life. But of course the dual-core means much more performance for those of us who are doing a lot of concurrent tasks.

Cheers,
Charlie
