Default New Vostro A90 owner - 06-09-2009, 01:34 AM

Hey folks, new to the board and to netbooks. Just ordered a new Vostro A90 and can't wait to hack it to run the Mac OS. First things first I guess....need a new Runcore 32GB SSD, 2 GB RAM and the retail Mac OS pack.

Looking forward to learning from the board!

Welcome to the Forums! Lots of useful and helpful info here! Swing on down to the Mac OS X section of the boards for the skinny.

I've had my A90 for just over a week now and I love it.

Already tried OSX on it, and Windows 7, both run really well.

You'll definately want at least a 32GB SSD if you want to install much other than the OS. I'm hoping to snag a couple of RunCore drives myself soon, so I can put different OS's on them and just swap em out as needed.

It's a great little machine.

I wish I could go bigger than the 32GB SSD but the 64GB cost almost as much as the netbook itself.

I'd like to rip movies to the SSD to watch on flights...anyone running Mac OS and ripping movies to the 32GB?

Rip the movies and put on an SDHC card. DVD Movies, how do they play on the Mini?

Aye a large SDHC card is a must to have.

Just don't get screwed paying a premium for "special" ones that are supposedly for netbooks.

Default Got my A90 last week - 09-11-2009, 09:14 PM

Hi all,

My Dell Vostro came in last week: 1GB 16 GB Ubuntu 8.4. Worked right out of the box. What are the top 5 must-upgrades?

Thanks

Thanks. The performance is so far snappy. Besides, I wouldn't know what to do with the 1GB chip. Just set up a 1GB swap file for my Ubuntu. That should be enough for a while. I don't have games. So 1GB memory is quite sufficient.

Here are the first 5 things I have done:

1. Installed truecrypt to take care of my data security. The .profile is set up to auto-mount the encrypted volume at login.

2. Increased Terminal output buffer size to 50000 lines.

3. Installed Tomboy Notes to take notes.

4. Installed 1GB swap file to help the memory.

5. Bought a PNY 16GB USB drive for all my backup. The drive is slimmer than Kingston or Cruizer, so that you can plug two side by side. The design is clever to protect the connection end without a detached cap.

Ubuntu 8.4 is cool. But it's great with the Dell Vostro A90.

I am officially off the Windows shackles.

Cheers.
