Default Ubuntu is Fugly and makes my eyes hurt - 05-15-2009, 06:52 AM

Love my new mini 12 but man.... Ubuntu is about the ugliest OS since DOS. Tried numerous times to download and install different themes with no luck. Can anyone help me get this thing looking nice? I would much prefer the look of Kubuntu, but have no idea how to make the switch. I don't mind Ubuntu, just cant deal with all this brown...

download the kubuntu .iso and load it on a usb drive and boot from it. it will give you the option to install it.

I believe it's as easy as

sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

In Gnome installing themes is pretty easy. Download the zipped file and DON'T unzip it. Open Preferences - Appearance - Theme, click the Install button and select the zip file you downloaded.

Hi Porkchop, check out this site:

Eyecandy for your GNOME-Desktop - GNOME-Look.org

Ubuntu can look like whatever you want it to look like.

Kubuntu can be run and installed off of a USB drive, simply download the iso and use unetbootin or other programs to load it onto a USB drive. Otherwise Ubuntu 9.04 NBR is better looking and has a better interface.

If you seriously want to just get rid of the brown, there are other colors and theme installed by default. Just go to system/preferences/appearance.

Thanks for that gnome-look link! I've been trying to customize Gnome for a while now, and the stuff there looks nice.
