Default Hard Drive space not adding up? - 04-23-2009, 04:30 PM

Hmmm, I am in the process of removing and installing items I want on my new mini.

It came with the 8gb hard drive...
I have 7.11 taken up, and only 600mb free...

Now, when I open the hard drive in my computer, and select all the folders and icons, It tells me there is only 4.5gb used....

somewhere, there is a few more files taking up space, but I have no clue where. I changed the settings to view hidden files, and that didn't change anything..

Anyone have an idea whats happening?

Yes, the XPHome SP3 that came on it.

I plan on going to windows 7 when I get my runcore 32gb SSD though, but thats going to be a bit

well, the usual culprits in windows are the page file and hibernation.

I have hibernation off, and pagefile turned off also.

Kinda strange... I'm tempted to just do a fresh install from the CD's.

i'm not sure, but there may be a weird dell-installed partition which is hogging the extra room. try using a disk utility to peek around for a hidden partition. if none is found, i'd just wipe it and start afresh.

I checked, and only 2 partitions on the drive. The little dell system partition, and the main Windows one.

I did notice that even though I have the swap file turned off, the system SAYS it is using a 2011mb swap file....

Is there a different place to change the settings on that other than in:
My Computer Properties -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced -> virtual Memory??

that's the only place that i know of. try setting a custom page file of 0 mb? (make sure you click "set", not just "ok")
