Default New Mini 9 Owner Here - 04-04-2009, 10:59 PM

Hello.

I've finally joined the netbook community, courtesy of my refurbished Dell Mini 9 running Linux. It's only a base model, with 512MB of RAM and a 4GB SSD, but the price was right ($144 plus sales tax).

I plan to buy 2GB of RAM shortly, since it's a trivially cheap upgrade. A SSD upgrade will probably wait, since 4GB+SD Cards+USB HDDs is plenty of storage, once you take out the pre-installed software that I won't ever use, like OpenOffice, Totem, Acrobat Reader, ATI graphics drivers (I don't know why these were even there.), Mono, etc.

I look forward to using my Mini extensively as a portable computer, and maybe even as a quiet, power efficient server when paired with a USB HDD.

Welcome to the forum, and to the Mini 9 community.

That is odd that they installed ATI drivers! :? Wishful thinking? I received mine with XP SP3, but basically did the same thing...uninstalled a bunch of unneeded apps.

Thanks for the welcome. As for the ATI drivers (and others), a standard Ubuntu install includes drivers for many different cards. But they're pretty pointless on a Mini, so they're now gone

I do keep the "safe mode" drivers, so the OS on my SSD would work (suboptimally) in a system with nVidia/ATI/etc graphics, but I kinda doubt I'll need to do that.
