Default BIOS Upgrade Question - 03-29-2009, 03:11 AM

Hi. I want to upgrade my BIOS from A00 to A04 in prep for an OS X install, but

1. I never get the "save as" prompt when i download the A04 BIOS exe from; and
2. It says I have nowhere to flash the BIOS to.

Q: Are these related? What does it mean to flash the new bios? Does it mean I have to write it to a flash drive? But I never get the "save as" prompt.

Thanks, pretty confused right now on this one.

To "flash" the BIOS simply means to overwrite your BIOS with a new copy.

Dell's site lists 2 versions of the BIOS upgrade utility, a Windows one, and a DOS one. The DOS one must be put on a bootable USB stick, and then you boot off of it. The Windows one is easier to use, but a number of people here have reported ruining ("bricking") their Mini by using this version.

somms has created a BIOS Upgrade Utility which automatically prepares a USB stick you can boot off of, with the files needed to flash your BIOS under DOS (the safer method).

Also, FYI, version A05 has been released internally, and will soon be available on Dell's website.
