Default Boot-up times - 03-17-2009, 01:28 PM

Hi - first post on here! I big thank-you to everyone for all masses of useful threads and info on here already! Ordered my Mini 9 a couple of weeks back - due tomorrow according to Dell. We'll see!

Anyway, one of my main reasons for buying one of these babies is for a casual web-surfing and access to email anywhere around the house without the hassle of booting up the desktop or worst still, getting the lap-top out and booting up. For me, if things aren't instantly available, they dont get used as much.

So, encouraged by the reported fast boot-up times of netbooks running Linux and tempted over the edge by Dell's recent £100 off promotion, I've gone for a Mini 9 1GB RAM 8GB SSD running Ubuntu.

Now, i've read numerous debates on here on Ubuntu vs. XP vs. Windows 7 vs. OSX etc etc, but I cant see for my casual use that anything better than Ubuntu is needed, but crucially, i'm assuming this will offer the best boot-up time too.

Is this true? Are there better options for near instant access? Does Ubuntu have a sleep or hibernation mode? If so, what battery life can i expect when asleep?

I can only really advise on the boot time out of your questions. My XP Pro mini boots in around 35 seconds to being usable. It was around the same with the Ubuntu that Dell shipped if I remember rightly.

My Mini, only a day old from the Dell boots into a usable state in unbuntu in about 25 seconds from pushing the power button... it also shuts down in about 20 seconds...

so i guess it depends on instant on.... You can hibernate unbuntu, but i haven't really played with it, and i'm not really sure how it affects battery life...
