Default Just joined the Mini 9 club - 03-09-2009, 02:30 PM

Hi everyone,

After reading about netbooks and seeing a certain recent Gizmodo article, I decided to take the plunge and bridge the gap between my antiquated cellphone and my 1st gen iMac G5. I'm a cheapskate, so I shopped the outlet store and just ordered a $189 Ubuntu Mini 9 refurb (512 RAM, 4GB SSD, 1.3MB webcam and Bluetooth). I figured that I can upgrade the RAM and SSD on my own, and I'm looking forward to playing with Ubuntu for the first time. This site has already been a great resource, and I'm looking forward to catching up on older posts and continuing to expand my knowledge.

The Hackintosh idea is a serious temptation, but I'm not ready to spend the money and take the chance just yet. I'd like to make sure that I can get it working as is first!

Anyway, glad to be here!

Welcome to the board. OSX runs great on the Mini. If you do decide to do it, you won't regret it. It's like having a baby macbook.

You'll need to upgrade your SSD for it to work though. Lots of info available.

Ubuntu runs great too.

Good luck, and enjoy.

Congrats on your purchase!

You will definitely find a lot of good information here on this site and a lot of the folks here are willing to help. I am running Ubuntu/Fedora 10 and Windows 7 on my Mini's and couldn't be happier. And as was mentioned, upgrading the SSD will more than likely be required.

Best of Luck and Welcome!

Thanks very much!

Apparently the Runcore SSDs are backordered at mydigitaldiscount, so I've got a forced waiting time anyway. If (more like "when", really) I'm ready to make the switch to OSX, I'd probably just go for the 16GB SSD, since my Mini would be mainly used for mobile web/e-mail and some basic document editing. Meanwhile, that's just more time to browse the board.

It's here!

My wife's jaw hit the ground when I took the Mini 9 out of its box. It was in flawless condition (except for a few smudges on the screen), and everything seems to be working fine. Swapped the 512MB RAM out for a 2GB stick, but then discovered that only 1GB was being recognized. I just read on the forum that updating Ubuntu might fix it (just have to wait until I can get to a WiFi spot).

I love this thing already, and knowing that a Hackintosh option is right around the corner makes it even more fun.

Congrats! I didn't get as good of a deal but I couldn't wait for one to come around and just accepted the extra cost so that I can get mine sooner.
