Default My wireless speed is never 54 Mbps - 02-26-2009, 07:55 PM

Hello,

I have "g" router at home and my two other notebooks connect at 54 Mbps.
Dell Mini however gets usually 24 Mbps, and I think I saw once 36 Mbps.
Why would that be?
Is "g" or "b" antenna in minis?
I use Mini in the same room my router is. While other notebooks are in the other room.

Thanks in advance for your comments and or hints !!

I've noticed the same thing myself.

I also mostly use my mini in the same room as the router, but when I go a bit further into another room I mostly see 54Mbps.

Signal is even good in the backyard too.

Because of this mod.

From what I've read, the farther from the WAP you are, the better the signal.

Well, in any room now. It gets 18 Mbps. Why would it communicate slow like this??

It could be a multitude of things.

How many walls does the signal have to go through to communicate? What do those walls consist of? Do you have other non-network appliances that are within range (phones, microwave ovens...)? Do you have computers that are using the 802.11b protocol (the wifi network will only move as fast as the protocol of the slowest computer)?

54g is theoretical. Realworld, you're probably not going to get close to that speed. Also, what are you using to measure your connection speed? Windows is notoriously bad at measuring such speed using their standard tools (ie, mousing over the wifi icon).

One drywall wall. Mousing over the tiny icon next to the clock. I have humidifier (that actually is a lot of really distortion for my FM radio) and N800 internet tablet here too.
I guess my other laptop is just showing "hypothetical" speed...

You will NEVER get 54 Mbps. 54 Mbps is the max speed with everything perfect. In the real world, nothing is perfect.

So, what is the "real world" speed of Wireless G? Answer: 19 Mbps

dim7, I think you are confused about the speed your wireless desktop was getting. Monitor it closely and see what the max is. IMO, using wireless on a desktop is like putting a suitcase full of lead in the back of a sports car.

54 is max i believe. i can only get 54 if i'm like 2 feet away from the router or else it's usually 35-38 at the most and that's 3 rooms away.
