Default How can I tell the size of the hard drive? - 02-23-2009, 09:01 PM

I ordered an 8GB from Dell a few months ago but I am more and more convinced it's only a 4GB (white screen problem etc). How can I find out what the size of the hard drive is?

Thanks in advance

EDIT: Found by typing in df I get

3555040 - is that 4gb or 8gb?

4GB assuming 1K blocks. Did you check the BIOS settings to see what size drive is being reported?

Yes, it was 1k blocks. BIOS says 7683MB. Does this mean my hard drive has somehow been partitioned? I have literally used it just for the internet.

Have you installed updates? The original image Dell was using was broken, and the drive was mispartitioned.

are you comfortable enough with computers to do a fresh install? i'd always choose that over factory stuff just cuz i know what i'm supposed to have and i know what i put on my computer. :/ if you arent, then i'm pretty confident the kind folks here will be able to help walk you through getting your partitions back to normal

Not to hijack, but how can you tell how much Video Memory has been allocated? (I upgraded to A04 BIOS and understand it may have been affected but don't know how to find out.)

Right click 'My Computer', select 'Manage' then navigate to disk management, that should tell you if there is a partition being used for the rest of space.

For Ubuntu (or any Linux):

df -h ==> drive space usage in human-readable format

free ==> memory usage; '-k' switch for kilobyte format; '-s' switch for continuous polling

Note that memory usage in Linux is quite different than Windows, so don't be alarmed if you see your memory maxxed out. Linux swaps programs in and out of memory based on priority.
