I've seen another laptop with this identical design from Dell, the Latitude x300. It makes sense from a netbook/small laptop perspective, because batteries can generate heat while charging. With the battery exposed to air on three sides, it's less likely to heat up the rest of the Mini 9.

I'm pretty sure I've noticed them in some Staples stores.
