The Microcenter near me on LI, NY has them for $449, but they look like an older model? There is a large rectangular hole below the hinges to the keyboard that I don't see on the Dell website. Very odd.

There is no "older model" of the Mini 9. Don't know what you saw.

I think you saw a Mini with its battery missing.

The battery is underneath, isn't it? This was the area directly on the upper edge of the keyboard, under the screen. The open space (and I mean totally open - not an empty box) was appx 1" x 3". I have no idea what that's all about, but that's what the display model looked like. I was operational, btw.

That's the battery. It slides out the back of the unit when the screen is closed.

Why would the battery being removed leave a big hole in the TOP of the system with the unit open? That doesn't make any sense at all.

Because the battery casing goes all the way to the keyboard surface.

I take it you don't own a Mini 9 yet.

You would be correct. That picture is what I saw at Microcenter. It still doesn't make any sense to me why Dell would design a battery compartment like that, though.

It's not a "compartment". The battery effectively is part of the case. When in place, it does not protrude from the back or the bottom - it's quite nice.
