Default Dell Mini 9 vs Dell Vostro A90 - 01-30-2009, 07:26 PM

Hi everyone,
I am very close ot buying a mini 9 and installing OS X on it but then today I came across this little bad boy http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/produ ... cs=ukbsdt1

I personally think it looks the nuts and wondered if anyone had any experience with Leopard on this machine and if anyone thinks I should have no problems installing it. Its like Ā£235 in the UK which is a mega bargain if you ask me.

Please give me any advice about it if you can. I was going to go down the boot 132 and retail leopard install disk route and use my external DVD drive.

Thanks everyone, look forward to hearing from you

The Mini and Vostro A90 share the exact same hardware and the BIOS versions are actually interchangeable.

ATM running the latest Vostro A90 BIOS A03 on my Mini. I dig having the Vostro BIOS splash screen!

thanks for the reply. What i am confused about is the price...this upgraded on is actually cheaper than the mini 9. It does say it has a different chipset and graphics accelerator, would this make a difference to my install?

It uses the same chipset as the Mini9...there is absolutely zero hardware diff between the 2!

Slightly different Intel chipset and graphics card version (lower spec'd I'm assuming but I don't have much experience with laptop graphics), but otherwise appears to be the business division's equivalent to the consumer division's mini 9.

Where are you getting your incorrect info from :!: :?:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/s ... HA01MR.pdf
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/s ... JA00MR.pdf

According to the .pdf spec documents over at Dell, there is no hardware difference between the Mini9 and Vostro A90.

Flash the latest A90_A03 BIOS onto your Mini if you still don't believe me.

so youre all pretty sure I could install OS X on this beauty as i would with a mini 9. On the dell uk site for example it says that the Vostro A09 has a Integrated IntelĀ® 945GSE graphics1 card & IntelĀ® 945GSE chipset but the mini 9 has a IntelĀ® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950 & IntelĀ® 945PM / GS Express Chipset.

I don't see how flashing a system (motherboard) BIOS demonstrates that it must be supporting/using the same graphics card in both systems.

If the site is wrong that's fine, but this will be the 2nd time in 2 days I've seen Minis for sale on their site with different cards in them; and it's not unknown for Dell to switch parts in the lifecycle of a single MODEL of product, let alone across multiple models (they're notorious for example on switching the displays they use in their LCD monitors from one revision to the next, i.e. the A00 version of a 2407WFP may have entirely different manufacturer and specification screen than the A03 version of that same model).

I'd be cautious until it's proven either way - a call to Dell (in the region you're buying it from) may help satisfy any concerns.
