Default Leaving my Dell Inspiron 9 on - 01-19-2009, 05:49 PM

Is it safe to leave my Dell Mini Inspiron 9 on all night? I was wondering as my machine gets quite warm when plugged in to the power supply when I am using it. Thanks

I've left mine on all night, and my only bit of advice would be:

Place it on a smooth surface such that air can get underneath it. I put mine on my desk and prop the back up on a little moleskin notebook I carry with it. As long as air can circulate, it should be fine.

YMMV...

Mine is always plugged in on my desk and sits there all night, usually on. It's become my main daily machine, so torrents all night over wireless N, and gets pretty hot. Seems fine, though.

I use a Dell Mini9 with OS X, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD, 802.11n Airport card, and IrDA.

When I'm not traveling, I use mine to stream audio from the internet 24-7, and it stays cool. If you're doing anything that exercises the CPU/GPU/SSD/RAM, it could become quite warm, what some might call hot.

Thanks all, is it okay to leave it closed while on all night though? I will also be using it to stream overnight.

The main heat sink is located beneath the keyboard, so running it while closed will trap the heat that would normally be dissipated into the air.
The machine will run hotter and your LCD will be heated up as well.
Leaving it open just a crack might make a big difference, although having it open is no doubt optimal.

When I run Skype while gaming on another computer I tend to prop the front up so the air can circulate a little easier through the machine.
I also shut off the wireless when I connect via the Ethernet port to keep things cooler.
