Default newbie question - 01-13-2009, 10:24 PM

Just got the MINI 9. Surprised it used IE6. Should I download IE7 or will it not be able to handle it. Perhaps I should use google chrome?

Also, can I upgrade to Vista or is the mini unable to handle it?

Thanks.

What are your mini's specs? SSD capacity? RAM?

It should be able to handle IE7 no problem, same with Chrome. In fact, 7 is probably better security-wise than 6. I upgraded to 7 as soon as I got my mini. As for Vista, yes the mini can handle it...I have it installed currently.

For further info on Vista on the mini, check out the forum section on Vista > HERE

Thank you. Here are my specs:
Inspiron 910 Intel Atom processor N270, 1.6GHz, 533Mhz512K L2 Cache
1GB,DDR2,533MHZ,1 DIMM

If it can handle Vista, I wonder why Dell does not offer it? Only XP.

You should be able to install and run Vista. I have seen, on this forum, people installing a trimmed down version of Vista (using VLite) on 8 gb drive, same with the Windows 7 beta. You might want to consider upgrading your RAM, swapping it out for a 2 GB stick, since they are cheaper these days, and will help Vista run more smoothly.

Not sure why Dell only sells the mini 9 with XP or Ubuntu...there may be some sort of restriction placed by Microsoft.

Personally I never upgrade IE6 to IE7. I tell Windows Update not to bother me about that update again, and leave IE6 installed. I generally use Firefox for almost everything, only using IE temporarily when I have to because some web page or other won't work, and even then I only run it under Firefox with the IETab extension.

However, I assume IE6, IE7, Firefox and Chrome and any other web browser you'd like to try (anybody for Safari for Windows?) will run fine on the Mini 9.
