Simple question from a simple person!
Can you connect an external SATA drive to the mini 1012?

you failed to mention which OS you are on, but with a 1012 I am guessing its Win 7

I think we need some more details as to what you mean by "external SATA drive". None of the Minis have an eSATA connector, so if you need that you're out of luck. If it's a SATA drive in a USB enclosure, then sure, no problem with any of the Minis.

silly me....I was assuming he meant USB not eSATA...but he could have I guess

The only way of connecting an external drive to a Dell Mini is via USB.

So, a bare, internal SATA drive would need a dock, adapter, or enclosure with USB.

An "external" drive with eSATA and no USB would need an adapter (or you might be able to pull the drive out of its enclosure and use it like an internal SATA drive).

Only if it was a 2.5" drive.

The question explicitly stating a "SATA" drive suggested to me it was either a bare drive or an eSATA drive, though many of those also have USB connections available.
