Default Wireless won't work in Switzerland! - 01-11-2009, 11:24 AM

Hi, my Mini 9 connects automatically at home, I also have another router which I can connect to no problem, but on a recent trip to Switzerland I tried to connect to 3 different networks, one of which even had no security but couldn't. My iphone went in every time.... The wireless manager shows the network ok but no matter what I did it wouldn't connect; back home, straight in ! I'm on Linux, any ideas please?

The wifi card in the mini doesnt isnt very good in linux imho. So it could be a mix of drivers and hardware incompability. Or perhaps youre still using Ubuntu 8.04 which does not work properly with WPA encrypted networks (out of the box).

I'd say that the card doesn't work well in Windows either. It gave me lots of trouble connecting to my home router - so much so that I replaced it with an Intel card which is fine. I would say that the problem isn't "Switzerland" but that the Dell card has trouble associating with certain access points/routers.

I have an older Linksys router (BEFW11S4), and the Mini simply will not connect using WPA, although my older Compaq will. I've been forced to downgrade to WEP until I'm able to get a hold of another router.

Oh, yeah. I can connect using WPA to a Netgear router just fine. Weird. The wifi card in this thing is quirky.

I haven't had a single problem connecting to any WAPs using my Mini 9, running XP or Windows 7.

And at home, I have a home-rolled router/WAP running FreeBSD/pfSense, with WPA2 security.

BEFW11S4 never implemented WPA correctly in some builds of the firmware. It was iffy for many adapters/cards to be able to connect to one.

Have you used one? Any idea if an older version of the firmware would gimme a better chance of being able to connect using WPA?
