Exclamation "hal.dll is missing or corrupt" message on boot-up - 09-20-2010, 06:44 AM

I have read many posts on this error message...
Except i can not solve the problem for my own.
I had been wanting to restore my mini and re install xp.
I do not have a cd drive but i got in my hard drive and found the copy of the windows install in my folders.. After it rebooting too finish its install it told me i didnt have enough disk space... I went to delete a few things.. And after rebooting and trying again i got the "hal.dll is missing or corrupt message"... I try to go back to the screen to click "cancel setup" but it doesnt give me that option...

What am i suppose to do?
If i had a cd drive and used a disk.. Would that work?
And does using a cd not require disk space?

I just hope that my computer is not screwed.
Need help guys. Thanks.

What you need to do is boot from the CD, select a "Custom" install, then delete all the existing partitions and tell Windows to install into the unpartitioned space.

Which model Mini do you have? Did it come with a restore CD?

Do i select custom install on the boot up menu?
it doesnt go any further than that.

and I have the Dell Mini 9... and also have the XP CD.
It wont let me delete one of the partitions and its the one with the most space...

You would select Custom on the first install screen. What error do you get when you try to delete the partition?

When I try to delete the partition it says..."setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the selected partition. This partition contains temporary Setup files that are required to complete the installation"

Plus since I have never used a portable CD DRIVE... im not sure my computer even recognizes it even plugged in...

is it possible to have it read?

You can't do this while running the install from the internal disk. It has to be from an external device, such as a USB CD reader. Can you borrow one? The way you'd do this is plug in the CD reader (on the Mini 9, to the USB port closest to the power jack), insert the CD. When the Dell logo appears, press 0 and select to boot from USB. Then choose a Custom (or "Advanced", I forget which) install and then delete the internal disk partitions.

It may also be possible to create a bootable USB flash drive from your CD (on another computer).

Got an external drive.. Tried this.. And none of it worked. BUT I got some programming codes and finally got it to boot up normally and got it to finally recognize the external drive. So its fixed now! Thank goodness. But thank you soooooo much for your help! I appreciate it.
