Default Dell Warranty Ship Parts? - 09-10-2010, 05:14 AM

If I have an Inspirion consumer laptop w/o any extra warranty and something like a hard drive, keyboard, trackpad, etc breaks on my laptop can I call Dell and have a replacement part shipped? Or will they require me to send in the machine for service?

Dell is known to ship parts that are user-replaceable. They will include a prepaid label for you to ship the old part back - if you don't, they'll charge you for the part. A keyboard is pretty easy for the user to replace, a trackpad less so. It may depend on the part and which CSR you get.

I contacted Dell via the online chat and they agreed to ship the part only after the usual disclaimer. Seems like all "field replaceable" parts can be obtained as such. A little easier to order parts from HP commercial support since they don't ask to remote into your computer and update drivers.
