Default A.C. to battery - 05-18-2010, 04:08 PM

Hi,
I couldn't find anythiing to answer this on search, so I was wondering. If you're running on mains supply and you unplug the A.C. cord, when the laptop is on, and let it run just on the battery immediately, (i.e. without switching it off or closing down, in between), is it harmful?... for example, if there is a sudden lightning storm, and you want to disconnect from the mains straight away. - thanks.

no, there is nothing wrong with doing that...there is no reason to shut it down first....I personally if I go the opposite way (from battery to AC) I always plug it in to the wall first then the Mini because just incase there is any type of spark or surge from the outlet the Mini is not plugged in yet, after I plug it into the wall and all is ok, then I plug it into the Mini...but thats just me...

I've pulled the plug on laptops while they're on a thousand times.

The only thing I ever saw happen when you unplug the AC cable and switch to battery without rebooting is the screen usually sets itself to not as bright a mode and the CPU on some laptops cuts back the speed of the CPU. Of course it does this to lessen the load on the battery. You could say the computer is looking out for your best interest. Bright little suckers aren't they. fdalbor

fdalbor is correct, my HP dims when I do it, but what I said in my post wasnt really about unplugging as much as it was about plugging...I always plug in the wall first just in case of a surge or something then plug in the Mini, most people dont think it makes a difference but I figure why take the chance...
