Go to Ubuntu.com and download 10.04 netbook remix. Then you will need to install it on a USB flash drive and install it on your computer. You can use the usb creator utility on Ubuntu. Because dell chose to customize 8.04 they created there own distro that cannot be updated the normal way.

Welcome to the forums.

I'm afraid I have to agree with T-Keith. The easiest and best upgrade path from "Dellbuntu 8.04" to normal Ubuntu 10.04 is probably a complete reformat and fresh install (after backing up your files, naturally).

But Ubuntu installation is usually pretty straightforward, the only "difficult" choice I think you'd have to make during installation is making the call to completely reformat the hard drive.

Thanks for all your help. After quite a few frustrating hours, I finally managed to do it. Now, one more problem, I can't seem to connect to the internet via wireless connection. Any suggestions!!

Unfortunately, the latest versions of Ubuntu require you to manually install the drivers for Broadcom wireless cards (which is what I think you have in your 10v). The easiest way to get the necessary drivers working is: connect to the Internet via an cable, then run in a terminal:
Code:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install bcmwl-kernel-source
For more info, consult this page. Or google "ubuntu broadcom".
