Default Which model Dell Mini ( Newbe question ) - 04-26-2010, 05:32 AM

Hello, I love the site and I'm selling my Studio 1555 right now to buy a Dell Mini 10. I'm really excited to do this, but I have some questions. I have found other post and know people have asked these same questions before. I'm sorry so many people to this, but I like to make 3x sure before I sell a laptop that was 700 at the time to buy a lower power Dell mini.

I just got a Ipad, so I don't really need a laptop. I'm kind of on the border about selling my laptop since I like the size, but I really want a Mac OSX. I don't do gaming or anything I need a powerful laptop for. I have a desktop, so I'm not worried about giving up my current laptop.

I want to know what Dell Mini is the best 1010/1011/1012?
What is the best for fully functional and near or if not perfect. This will most likely be my main laptop for items that my Ipad won't do like itunes, web surfing( aka Flash ), and min. photo editing.

Please give out the reason why you choose one model over the next.

One more thing What is the videocard that the 1011 easier to install?

Thank you for your time and thank you for looking.

the 1011 is discontinued, maybe find one on the for sale here or maybe ebay
1010 will run OSX but with some limitations
1012 OSX is still being tested...try searching this forum

PS. none of the Minis have video cards, just video chips (GPU..graphics processing unit)
the 1010 has the GMA500, the 1011 had the GMA950 and the 1012 has the GMA3150

Good Luck and Welcome to the forum....

All if these generally do not handle flash very well and as far as photo editing....Photoshop pretty much lags on these also especially with 1gb, 1010 can only handle 1gb..not upgradable...1011...will take 2gb if you can find one and the 1012 will take 2gb

Thank you for your reply. I meant chip that was my mistake, so does the Dell mini 1011 run near perfect? You can still find the in the outlet, ebay, and amazon. Is that the one to get?

As far as flash playing hulu will most likely happen?

If I was interested in OSX on a 10" Dell Mini, I'd only consider a 10v (model 1011). The old 10 (model 1010) is a poor choice. The new 10 (model 1012) might be a good choice EVENTUALLY (check this thread for info about the progress of OSX on the 1012).

HD video in Flash won't work. Even SD video in Flash can be a problem.

If you're planning on making the Mini your primary machine, I think you'll be disappointed. I love my Mini 9 (very similar to the 10v), and I do alot of web browsing and shopping on it. But sometimes I need the power of a desktop or full laptop.

Like I said I have a iPad, so that my main pc since I mainly use email, internet, and papers for school. I don't need a power house, but if I do I have a power pc desktop for gaming that I built. My laptop since my iPad as been barely used if used. I use It for iTunes and that basically it. It's going to be used like a mid point from my iPad and my desktop.

Will the Dell mini 1011 run like a a Mac I would buy? Will it just do the things I want like iTunes to back up and update my iPad?

It will pretty much behave like a Mac, though not with the speed of a current one. iTunes is fine. We have a large and active Mac OS section of the forum - I invite you to ask questions there.

Due to the hardware or the hack? I will surely look at that section

The processor is much slower than a modern MacBook. Faster than the old PowerBooks, though.

It's not discontinued. still available via DellOutlet- certified refurbished with 1 Year standard Dell Warranty. Check in the Main Forums there should be a thread about coupons or something. Or sign up for their email newsletter since DellOutlet (USA) offers coupon codes often. I got my Dell mini 3 weeks ago through Dell Outlet at 15% off and free shipping.

I think the Dell Mini will work well for you if you already have a main desktop at home. The iTunes and Flash support should work well on the 10v. You may want/have to upgrade your hard drive depending on how big your iTunes collection is. As far as the photo editing, a 2gb RAM upgrade is probably a good idea- either doing it yourself or purchase a preinstalled system (which can't be done through Dell, only other users who've already upgraded their ram).

P.S. Oh yeah, there's a sale forum here, too. Check that out for some good deals from other users. Just go through Paypal for security.
