Default security software - 01-02-2009, 12:39 AM

Hi! I just got my mini 9 and it has no a.v. and only the windows firewall. I was wondering what would be the best anti virus and firewall software to use o the mini?

A few programs I recommend to anybody looking for free software to use.
Avast! Anti-virus---Basic version is free and you get updates for 12-14 months after you register it, which is also free.
Ad Aware 2008 by Lavasoft--good anti-spyware,anti-ad ware program.
Spybot Search and destroy-- same as the ad aware but it finds stuff ad aware dont and vice versa.
Zone Alarm basic firewall--exactly what it says, its a basic firewall thats free.

I'm currently looking into a stand alone firewall box that is built, programed and maintained by the user. It looks really good and I will post a update or start a new thread about it when its done. I found out about it from a video on you tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaeCxovsCVc You would have to do some research but I think it may be worth it.

I use NOD32 on the mini as it has such a small footprint and uses so few resources.

Having worked in a computer store off and on for the last 10 years, I always recommend AVG Free for 24-hour protection; plus Ad-Aware, and Spybot for regular maintenance. All three of these are free to use, and very effective. They are available from download.com.

How did you manage to get it without McAfee, or is it that you just don't know what that is?

I'd steer clear of McAfee anyway, and Symantec (unless you want your Mini slowed to a crawl, and Symantec's stuff is almost impossible to eliminate once you've infected your PC with it). There's Avast, NOD32, or AVG for anti-virus, and Comodo for firewall (and optionally anti-virus).

I disagree that the Symantec software is slow or difficult to remove. I have used Norton products for 14 years now and have been very pleased with the speed and low load of the Norton products of the last couple of years. AVG, on the other hand, has become what Norton software used to be - fat and slow. It also has a recent history of debilitating false positives, corrupting users systems. I have tried AVG in the past and it has given me nothing but grief.

You can download a free 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security 2009 and try it for yourself.

The McAfee that came with new units was just a 30 day trial. They should not charge for that.
