Hello. I couldn't resist the "2 Dell Mini 10vs for $398" deal that's floating around.

2x (Two) Dell Mini 10v Netbooks: Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz, 1GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, WiFi G, Webcam, 10.1" (1024x600) Screen, Win XP Home, 3-Cell Battery $411 - Slickdeals.net

This will be my first netbook. I plan on installing Windows 7 right away. Does anyone have any tips on Windows 7 optimizations for the Mini 10v? (Aside from the memory upgrade - I'd like to try everything with the 1 gig for now)

xp pro is faster and battery life is also longer than windows 7. Can Anything Replace Windows XP As the Best Netbook Operating System? - SlashGear

Windows 7 battery life is definitely better than XP.

And I have seen the opposite of that, as well as presentations from MS on power-saving features in the OS (particularly, grouping timed tasks so that the processor can spend more time at idle.

I will agree that if you always have the Aero theme active that battery life can suffer, but if you set the power profile to "Power Saver", it will switch to "Basic" when on battery and battery life goes up quite a bit. I saw battery life go from 3:10 to 4:20 moving from XP to 7.

I'll second that. I don't use Aero on my 10v, and use the basic theme (which looks like Windows Server 2008), and my battery life is much better than under XP.

I agree. My advice would be to disable aero / run the basic theme. My 10v runs aero okay with 2GB of RAM, but with it disabled, the computer is noticeably quicker.
