In which application? How would you do it from a regular keyboard?

The function keys are not over the numbers like a regular keyboard. If you want to do F7, you'll need to press and hold the Function key, then press the 'j' key. All the function keys are located across the middle letter keys (in blue).

As for spell check, what program are you trying to do spell check in? If you are in a word processor like Word, look for something in the menu like Tools > Check Spelling (or something similar). If you're in a web browser like Firefox, you can right-click your text and select "Check Spelling". For Internet Explorer, you would need to download a plug-in like ieSpell which works on XP. There are other spell checking programs available, but that's all I know of.
