| Junior Member Posts: 3 Join Date: Feb 2010 |  Rookie trying to Reformat his Dell Inspiron 1010 (mini)... Please help! -

Okay... I recently picked up a virus by the name of: Worm.Win32.Netsky. I went through the long process of getting rid of the virus and I'm pretty sure its all gone but I'm not 100% certain and decided to reformat as I save all my work on an external hard drive and have nothing of importance on the lap-top. I attempted to Boot from CD with the Windows XP OS in an external Disk drive as instructed on the Dell help website but have had no luck (it seems to get jammed at 57%??? Is there anything I need to do before booting the CD? Would love it if someone could show some help... Many thanks! Harry from England. |

do you have another CD to try..or can you try to make a copy of this one? you could also try to copy the CD to a USB and boot from Legacy USB and try to load from that PS. Welcome to the forum  |

Hi there, Thanks for such a quick reply... The CD is the Xp OS that came with the lap-top. It was unopened before I tried to reformat yesterday. Is there anything else I need to do before booting the CD to completely reformat the Lap-top? Grrr... Such a Pain! |

Yes it says, 'Setup is copying files...' It seems to slow right down and then eventually just stop! I've tried repairing also and it seems to get jammed as well. I think it must be this virus stopping it somehow as I'm still not able to access System Restore and the backgrounds all fruity. I'm close to taking the lap-top to a specialist but Its so darn expensive! |

A virus is not going to stop the Windows install CD from copying files at 57% or any other number. Either the disk is dirty/unreadable, or you have a defective hard drive, IMO. You'd be surprised how much a little dirt or fingerprint will jam up a CD. |

see if you can copy the install CD to either another CD or a Flash drive (use an 8gb or larger).. |
