It looks a little squished but not as bad as some people were complaining about. It's a little weird at first but tolerable and you get used to it.

He should be able to, but I don't know if it'd look the same for us as it does for him... Unless maybe we viewed it as "fullscreen" or something.

Just use a normal desktop, set it to 1024x768, do a print screen and make a jpeg.

If you set your netbooks background to the jpeg and have it scale to fit, it should squish it appropirately. A little bit hackish, but it would let you evaluate the option before installing any software.
