Default Dell Mini Feature Comparison: - 12-15-2009, 07:01 PM

Code:
So I typed up a whole long post, and it got deleted. Stupid.

I spent a long time on this, so please help me fill it in and make sure I have it
accurate.

I am stuck deciding between a 9 and a 10v for a hackintosh for my partner for
Christmas. I need to know in exacting detail all the specifications of each platform.
I am making my decision based on number of USB ports, space inside the case, and
price since the hardware between the 9 and 10v are so similar, afaik. I need to make
my decision post-haste, because Christmas is creeping up, and most of the offers I'm
looking at are live, in-person, cash-exchange, and time-limited.

After much painstaking research online, I came up with this:

Dell Mini Feature Comparison Matrix:

*geekwithlaptop.com mentions power USB ports in the Ports and Expandability
section. Does that mean two powered USB ports above and beyond the normal
two, for a total of four?

If you see any sections that are wrong, or any of the ??? sections you have
information for, please reply and fill me in. I want this table complete ASAP, so
I know which I'm buying.

All Mini 9 (and Vostro A90) netbooks have N270 CPUs.

No factory GPS option on the 9/A90. (I think the 10v lacks the option, too)

WWAN (cellular Internet) is a option on the 9/A90, but you didn't opt for it, the slot is probably missing.

No HDMI on the 10v.

Welcome to MyDellMini I am sure you will find the forums extremely helpful, useful and fun.

I hate it when you accidentally click "back" on your browser and lose the post you were composing... I know the feeling. Agh.

And I would recommend a Mini 10v. For me, this is the optimal size for a netbook. My 10v is small enough to tote around and not get in the way, the battery life is adequate, the keyboard is easy to type on and the keys are in the right spot (!), the screen is a nice size... etc etc.

Thank you very much. Your corrections have been reflected in the first post.

How many USB ports does it have? And yours is hackintoshed, yes? How well does it run with a HDD as opposed to a SSD? Can you do anything cool (games, photoshop, video, garageband), or is it mostly a word-processing, web-browsing, music-playing fiend (and for that matter, how does the sound fare on yours? And sleep?). Either way, it will suit my partner just fine, but I'm asking for when I make my own. Is your 320 drive a 7200rpm?

Also, would you say $275 cash-in-hand is reasonable for an in-box unused 10v with 1GB RAM, 160GB 5400RPM HDD, Win XP? I wanted to go lower in price, but this has the advantage of never being used (the seller just received it from Dell, apparently, yesterday), coming with all the original stuff, and not requiring waiting for shipping, as I would be picking it up in-person.

[EDIT]
Also, does the external video work on yours?
[/EDIT]

I don't want to get offtopic, but try re-entering the text box, then press "Ctrl+Z" (undo) when you accidentally delete the text in a text box, or go forward or back a page.

To get further off-topic, my problem was that I typed in a long post, then went away for an hour while I did that research. :P Live web content timeout. XD

Cool 12-15-2009, 09:05 PM

The Mini 10 has 3 USB's and 1 HDMI, no VGA the Mini 10v has VGA no HDMI
dont know what the n is but its just 10 and 10v no 'n's
not sure but I think that the Mini 12 is history
if you want to hackintosh it forget about the Mini 10, you have to get the 10v because of the GPU, the Mini 10 with the GMA500 will NOT work

Your only real choice is no choice....you basically have to get the Mini 10v or the Mini 9, might as well get the larger screen and a REAL HDD it also has an option of a 6 cell battery versus a 4 cell for the Mini 9 (which by the way I think will be history pretty soon also)

Dell Mini 10 (Obsidian Black 1010), 2gb RAM, 1.66ghz 533mhz FSB (Z530) processor, A10 BIOS, 1 Terabyte (1000 GB) WD Scorpio Blue Hard Drive (5400rpm), Intel GMA 500 Integrated Graphics, TV Tuner, Bluetooth 2.1 module with EDR, 1.3mp Camera, 1366x768 HD Screen, Wireless 1510 b/g/n mini card, 6 cell (56WHr) Battery, 4gb SDHC, 64gb Flashdrive, Targus Netbook Chillpad, Targus Sport Case, Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (500gb)/Windows 8.1 (500gb) (Dual Boot)

I thought an SSD helped to speed the thing up to a reasonable speed? I'll gladly take the higher-capacity HDD, but it was a point of consideration.

So the Mini 10v has 3 USB ports too? That would be awesome. Two USB ports is too few in this modern age, and 3 is pushing too few, but just barely enough.

Also, the n thing is what dell's site is showing me right now. They changed the processor available in the 10 (10v is still same), and apparently changed the model names too.

I am aware that really, only the 9 and the 10v are my choices, for OS X compatibility, but I figured I'd include the whole product line in my table, since I haven't found anything like it out there on the webs, at least not with all of the machines and all of the specs. I thought I would contribute to the solidarity of the internet and the easy availability of properly-structured easy-to-read and understand statistics/information.

Grab it before the mod deletes the link again ..though there's really no need to delete the link..

It'll contain the System Information and a Parts List for the: Inspiron 11z, Latitude 2100, Mini 9, Mini 10, Mini 10v, Mini 12, Dell Zino & Zino HD (the Zino's don't yet have parts lists).
