Default how to reinstall xp from USB drive - 12-09-2009, 06:09 PM

hi all

i'm new to the mini 9 system and just wanted to know how i'd go about doing a fresh install of XP home, using a USB stick. i copied and pasted all the files on the dell OS cd onto the USB stick and tried to boot from it on the initial startup screen but it doesnt seem to be working. is it not possible to do this and do i have to get a USB cdrom to do the install?

thanks

J

XP is a pain to install from USB. I gave up and just used a USB CD/DVD drive.

You have to make the USB drive bootable first. On a Windows system:

* Open a command line (under one of the menu options)
* Run the diskpart command line app. (Type: diskpart)

Enter the rest one after the other:

* list disk, to find the drive number of your usb stick.
* select disk #, to select the usb disk (put the number you found in the previous step in place of the # – be absolutely certain you have the right number!)
* clean
* create partition primary
* select partition 1
* active
* format fs=fat32
* assign
* exit

(Don't type the asterisks.) After this, then copy the XP CD to the USB stick and it should be bootable.

well, if you want to format, click on format...other than that, I told you its pretty easy to use....there are options available for other things but for you and to install XP, just source, destination, and whether or not you wanna format the flashdrive...when you are done, insert the USB Flash, reboot the mini, hit f12 during boot, arrow down to Legacy USB and you're on your own..

PS: make sure you check on Fixed Drive, I dont really know what it does differently than Removable...but play it safe..I didnt write this, just used it and it worked for me for Win XP and for Win 7..see my sig below...I have a dual boot that runs flawlessly

are you hitting f12 at boot?

are you getting boot choices?

what EXACTLY did you copy onto the USB drive?

what type of flashdrive are you using?

what size is it?

have you tried the same flashdrive in another computer?

how did you copy onto the USB drive...ie. where did the source come from?

where r u located?
