Hello. I just got my Mini today, and so far I am quite happy with it. I am noticing a faint noise though, which I could swear sounds like a quiet spinning hard drive, when the computer is busy. I know the Mini has a solid state drive, so what could this noise be that I am hearing? Thank you.

Possibly a slight hiss from the speakers.

Thank you, norrisg, that's what it was. It went away when I muted the speakers. It isn't a big thing for me, but is it normal for the mini? Thank you

Not for me, but I don't have the volume cranked up loud. My Mini is dead silent.

It's been reported by many people. I think someone said it was a glitch in the design of the sound chip. Mute the line in and microphone, I think that fixes it without having to mute the output.

My desktop does the same thing on Ubuntu with the line in not muted.

UnaClocker, thank you for the information. I can't seem to find where to mute the mic and line in - I could only find mic volume, and I turned it down. Could you tell me where to find those settings, please?

I'm not familiar with your OS, I'm primarily a Mac guy.. Maybe someone else can chime in.

The Mini only has one audio input, and that's the mike, which probably explains why XP's driver only exposes a control for that.

It has an internal mic, built into the unit, and an external mic jack. Two audio input sources. In OS X to get rid of the hissing, we turn off the external mic jack (sometimes referred to as line-in - the one next to the headphone jack) but leave the internal mic turned on.
