Unhappy Need getting all of the non-essential crapware off of Mini 10V - 11-08-2009, 05:08 PM

Hi
Is there a guide or can someone guide me to getting all
the non essential crapware off of the mini 10v?
I am used to my own programs, and I don't need mcaffe, windows
live, lojack- hardly anything else in my system tray.

That would be great if there was a guide for a person who
just bought a mini 10V and how to streamline it and make it
as fast as possible. For Free for starters. No hardware upgrades yet.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10V
1 gig ram
XP Home SP 3
160 Gig Hard Drive that came with it

Lots of software I don't want.
Lots of processes running I don't want.

I don't want hardly any of this stuff that came with it.

How do i make it as fast as possible??
You guys are pros.
Where do I start for FREE?

It can all be cleaned up/removed with Add/Remove Programs. Nothing special.

Lots of new members today, so Welcome to the Forum!

The Dell Mini 10v is actually one of the better netbooks for not installing loads of 'crapware' to start with, but if you do decide to remove McAfee, I hope you be replacing it with some form of anti-virus or security suite.

If you are after a free one the Microsoft Security Essentials offering is as good as any.

Are you planning a RAM upgrade later?... and possibly even Windows 7, which I think you will prefer to XP!

Hi thanks! Wolfkeeper.

It's just that I don't know what to remove.
Maybe A little technical advice from someone who
is used to removing the dell mini 10v extra software??

I want to upgrade to windows seven and two gigs of ram
and i guess a hard drive of some sort that is better or something from what i read??

I just want speed and i have all of these processes running.

I use Zone alarm and all my own little open source and freeware programs.

I just need help from someone who has one of these who
also knows how to streamline windows xp home on a mini 10v.

And also suggestions on what to add for free?
Also suggestions on memory and hardware. (i have a external dvd r/w/rw)

If i use "msconfig" that is fine for me just to disable things at startup
while i am getting used to my mini 10v.. it'st that thre are so many processes. To clean and software to uninstall. I dont want to unintentional uninstall a dell software i want. Like system help and recovery stuff. But i know how to do all of that by myself too.

Forst things first though! I need a usb mouse! This touch pad is driving me crazy- AND thats when I already am proficient at it! ; )

That's partly the reason these insane programs are bugging me so much
(windows live trying to update, mcaffe trying to start and update, dell trying to be in the backround collecting information about me all the time, microsoft trying to be in the backround all the time)

Im just trying to get used to my computer and not let it install anything, so its always buggin me right now- you know what i mean???

SORRY such a long post and probably in the wrong thread- But I will get used ot it.

Please help mini 10 v savvy and privacy oriented minimilists !

I am surprised that Windows Live is installed by default by Dell.

If you're going to upgrade to Windows 7, then just do it and all of the unwanted software will be gone.

upgrade...bah...fresh install.
If you don't want virus bloatware....install OSX.

Taking the time to clean out your xp sp3 install and then upgrading to win7 will be much better used if you jsut wipe and install win7. You will get no extra software beyond win7.

Thanks, then I have no support from dell- but I suppose that would be fine. After I repartition out the recovery and erase the dell system manegr thing. I suppose that would be fine though.

Maybe I could just do a fresh install of xp PRO sp3.
I have a copy of that.

Also, does Windows 7 work well on a min 10v?

Hey, i'm with you about bloatware. I will look into OSX for the mini 10v on this forum.
That seems to be the majority of this forums' position on things

It's about time I tried Mac maybe. To see what the deal is.

Still, i'm sure somebody here bought my system with everything
they send with it- and cleaned it up. Maybe they could tell me
what they cleaned out, what their partition is what programs they
like on it. For me specifically, and my dell mini 10v that is constantly
nudging and poking me and talking to the internet and opening windows
and decision windows, bothering me! Meanwhile i'm struggling to shut all
of these annoyances down at the same time with this
%$#%! TOUCHPAD !!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, i've been working alot of hours and I really haven't sat down for
a good DAY like I should and really immerse myself in cleaning it out.

Anyway i'm sure somebody here has done what I want to do.
Just got it a few days ago and don't want to leave myself in a position of having to BUY and OS or stuck without the computer.
This is the only computer I have that has the Internet.

dell mini 10 v
1 gig ram
XP Home SP3
160 gig hard drive that came with it
dell and microsoft bloatware

=====================
other 1.6 ghz desktop
running clean and fast for music and games.

Yes, it is - but it is a "remove XP and install fresh Win7" type of upgrade.

Windows 7 runs very well on the 10v.

No one ever likes what is installed by default from ANY vendor!

maybe you can screen shot your Add/Remove software screen and we can help you pick and choose software sets you can dump.
