Default New Member 10v OSX SL installed 2gb and Intel SSD baby! - 11-08-2009, 04:16 AM

Hello from Honolulu!

My first post, been lurking for awhile since I order my 10v 2 weeks ago.

Yesterday I completed phase 1, SL installed and running, a few bugs, hibernate not working, I disabled it cause of the "hibernate file too old message on boot" and Im also noticing a EFI_XXXX something message, oh well for now.

Here are my specs:
10v Alpine white
2gb Crucial pc-6400 ram
Intel x25-m 80gb 34nm
1.66 N280 Processor
1510 N wireless card
Bluetooth
3 Cell battery

Just bought a Magic mouse and is working perfect on the mini!

I took some pics of the upgrade process on my Nikon, will prob upload them later.

Welcome!

The alpine white is a sweet color combo, especially somewhere it can't get lost in the snow .

Glad to hear the magic mouse is working out, too.

How is the Intel SSD performance for you? Did you partition it for other OS or did you just go all OSX?

The performance is quite good, but its still slower than I had imagined, I suspect the processor N280 and chipset is the real bottleneck here.

File copying is blazing as I expected, shutdown is like 3 seconds. bootup for some reason is slower than expected.

I partitioned the whole drive as OSX as I prefer to work in OSX than Windows, but I did install VMWare fusion 3 today and Windows 7 Ultimate, which consumed another 8 gigs of the SSD, performance is good in VM, but video is way slow as expected.

My 2.93 iMac does this better, but Bluray rips play with a delay even with 1 Core and 2GBs dedicated to it.

Back to the Mini, in VM if dedicated 1.5gb to Windows most of the lag is gone and workable. Windows XP would certainly be a better choice, but I really wanted to see the performance under Win 7 Ultimate.

I have a 3 cell and on a full charge SL reports 2:35mins

I have uploaded some pics of the upgrade carnage.

Started with 2 Alpine 10vs, one win7 starter other Ubuntu (returning the ubuntu one (N270 processor GB wireless 16gb Samsung SSD, Bluetooth)

Keyboard and top shell off:

I fully disassembled the 10v as I needed to swap screens with the Ubuntu unit, my Win7 unit came with a free dead pixel!

Here is the back of the main board and ram that I used.

Picture of the screen and antenna leads:

This is the samsung 16gb SSD used in the SSD option from Dell:

And This is the Hot Rod that went into the Win7 unit 10v

That was ordered with the Ubuntu unit which I am returning to dell for a number of reasons, (I have the X25-M 80gb 34nm unit running in my Win7 10v)
1) 16gb is absurdly too small I realized later when I used 15gb already for the OSX SL install and Win7 VMware.
2) The N280 option was only available with Win7/WinXP track
3) No Wireless N available with Ubuntu track (I have an N router and would like to use it)
4) A dead pixel on the screen of the Win7 unit, no dead pixels on the Ubuntu, keeping the Win7 Unit, so I swapped the 2. IMHO, there shouldn't have been any to begin with. Gets me that they have been developing LCD screens and they still have units with dead pixels!!!

Nice pictures... but your comments are perhaps an example of what some other unsuspecting buyer might be sent as a 'refurbished' model.

No offence, but I wouldn't be too happy at receiving a Mini with a dead pixel on the screen, and one which had been replaced by a 'third party' at that... whether I was aware of that particular fact or not!
