Question Usb power consumption?? - 06-30-2009, 02:52 AM

Hello everyone,

I've a dell mini 9 and im planning to use all 3 usb slot with 8gb micro usb memory stick plus a 8gb sdhc card in the reader. I would have 32gb total.

I was wondering if i keep them permanently in there, will they use too much power? Will it be noticiable on the battery life?? Or do they use energy only when i will acess them??

Plus, im planning to buy a bigger SSD than my 8gb. Will the 32gb use more power?

Thanks for the help

There is very little current used when the flash memory is not being read or written. If your USB stick has an LED it draws more power than the memory does when idle. The SD card should make no difference.

There is some difference in power consumption between brands and models of SSDs, I don't think capacity has an effect.

The power draw of your led isn't going to be worth removing it IMO.

The current is very less when in-active. So you dont need to worry about it.
