Default GPS without SIM Card - 04-08-2009, 03:52 PM

If I install a SIM card into the mini I can then use the GPS function via the Wireless manager program - i.e. switich it on and off and receive the GPS data.

However if I try and do the same without a SIM installed it does not work - is there any way arounf this? I would like to be able to use GPS without having a SIM in place?

Probably not.

Your best bet is these: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16200

They're SIM cards from a now-defunct chinese (?) carrier - will make the device power up but it won't find a network to connect to. $1.75 USD with free worldwide shipping for 3 of them.

Should work just fine

T-Mobile sim can be purchased on line via T-Mobile site for $6.99. Think it comes with 10 min, but I don't know if data will work unless you activate as pay as you go type phone.

I beleive the GPS you are reffering to uses the cellular network to triangleate you posistion, therefore without a ACTIVE SIM you cannot use that GPS function you are reffering to.

Also if you were to add the other GPS. Im unsure of the term I call it Garmin like. The one that uses the satillites to get a position that would work without any SIM or additional service but, I do not beleive that Dell offeres both of them as an option.
